Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Why Is There a Priest?

  • The lesson opens the final month of a year-long walk through the tabernacle — the earlier months covered the tabernacle itself, investing in the church, the altar of sacrifice, the bronze laver, the door, the table of showbread, the candlestick, the altar of incense, and the veil — and October turns to the high priest, framed as the qualified church.
  • Teaching rather than preaching, the speaker starts from fundamentals: what is a priest, and why is there a priesthood at all, beyond simply answering that the Bible says so?

Eight People Repopulate the Earth

  • Genesis 9 names the sons of Noah who came out of the ark — Shem, Ham, and Japheth — and says the whole earth was peopled from them; only eight people came off the ark.
  • Genesis 10 traces their generations and the first cities, including Nimrod, the first mighty man on the earth, whose kingdom began at Babel, and the building of Nineveh.
  • Because the early generations lived so long, lifespans overlapped across generations — Methuselah died the year of the flood, and Shem was still alive in Abraham's day — so traditions could be handed down face to face, and every culture carries a flood story.

Scriptures: Genesis 9; Genesis 10

Babel: One Language, Scattered in Pride

  • In Genesis 11 the whole earth had one language; the people settled in the land of Shinar and built a city and a tower to make a name for themselves and to avoid being dispersed over the face of the earth.
  • Their building rose from hubris rather than obedience — a bid to act contrary to what God had said and to secure themselves against another flood.
  • God confused their language and dispersed them over the face of all the earth; one opinion the speaker cites traces the world's many religions to the traditions carried away from that scattering.

Scriptures: Genesis 11

Survival Mode Cannot Pass Down Values

  • A scattered people still has to order its society: a chief or political leader directs the whole — food, movement, where to winter — but survival living, one meal or one bill to the next, forces short yes-or-no decisions and leaves no room for long-form thinking.
  • Peoples stuck in survival mode fail to transmit what they have learned, because lived experience is hard to hand to a generation that did not live it — illustrated by a wartime grandfather whose peaceful farm and firm convictions collide with a grandchild raised in plenty.
  • So every civilization developed a priest: alongside the political leader, someone charged with the individual and with carrying the culture's principles and value system from generation to generation.

Priests in Every Civilization — and One God in Israel

  • Mesopotamia worshiped sky, fertility, storm, and underworld gods and had priests overseeing ritual sacrifices and divinations; in Egypt the priests served as delegates of a Pharaoh regarded as divine.
  • The survey continues through the Indus Valley and India, China's ancestor worship, and Greece's Olympian gods with their priests and priestesses; polytheism is presented as mankind's default mode.
  • Ancient Israel stands as the great exception — the most countercultural claim of all: one God, Yahweh, who declares, 'I am that I am.'

Man Has No Moral Code of His Own

  • Man does not possess a universal morality; values resting on personal preference differ wildly from person to person and cannot hold a society together.
  • Left to invent its own value system, mankind's record runs to human sacrifice, fertility cults, goddess worship, and nature worship — man's values, followed out, end in death, while the values of Christ end in life.

The High Priest: An Office Founded on God

  • Genesis 9:6 grounds the law not in man but in God himself: the blood of a murderer is required because man is an image-bearer of God — the code rests on who God is.
  • Leviticus 9, the foundation text for the month, shows Aaron set in office: Moses brings him to the altar to offer first for his own sin and then for the people, so the office magnifies the calling rather than the man who holds it.
  • The priest did not set the law or the culture's foundation; he mediates between generations and points each back to the word of God as the one foundation, and the lesson closes in prayer that lives be built on God's principles alone rather than on personal experience or preference.

Scriptures: Genesis 9:6; Leviticus 9:5-7

Worship and Intercession

  • The service continues in extended congregational worship and closes with the body interceding together for members and families facing sickness, injury, testing, and loss.

Scripture index: Genesis 9; Genesis 10; Genesis 11; Genesis 9:6; Leviticus 9:5-7.

the prior months, uh we've went over, we've been going through the tabernacle, uh and and doing our best to dig in as much as possible this year. Um now, I will say we probably didn't go as deep as some of the presporters. Oh, look at these guys. Uh pres Presbyterians. Now, I've heard of those guys have like taken a month a scripture in a month at a time. So, uh that's impressive and also scary. I I don't know if y'all have ever done that, but that's that's a whole lot.

Uh but we we have done our best to deal to deal with the tabernacle this month. Uh or the the the overall the Old Testament tabernacle this year. Uh January uh was the tabernacle. February was investing in the church. Um March was the altar of sacrifice. April was the la the labor, the bronze labor. Uh May was the door. June was the table of showbread. Uh July was the candlestick. August was the altar of incense. And September was the veil. And then this month is October.

It's the high priest or the qualified church. Uh if you have your journals with you, you'll you'll see you'll see some of this. Uh but we're going to talk about the Aionic priesthood for a little bit and the high priest and how that came about. But I really I really wanted to So I'm teaching, right? And so when you're when you're teaching, you you you take a different framework about how to approach something. You take a different you you really want to get down to the fundamentals of why.

So I really I started asking what is a priest? Why why is there a priest? Why why is there a priesthood at all? Outside of just the Bible says so, right? I mean, right? I mean, we could say why why that that's what you tell a kid because the Bible says so. But but we're studying. So uh in in uh in Genesis chapter 9, we come across the story of of Noah. Uh in Genesis chapter 9 we in verse 18 it says the sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shim, Ham, and Japheth.

Ham was the father of Canaan. I thought he was what you eat at Thanksgiving. All right. Thank you, Justin. I was counting on you there. I was counting on you. Uh verse 19. And these three were the sons of Noah. And from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed. That's if you count it, eight people. Eight people came off the ark. Eight people. That's some really awkward family reunions. You know, everyone's a cousin. It's like now now we don't do that. But apparently then you had to marry your cousin.

I mean, think about it. I know. I know you guys that live over in Squatchi Valley, we're not far removed from that. But Genesis chapter 10, it goes on with these generations. Genesis 10 verse one. These are the generations of the sons of Noah. Shim, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. The sons of Japath was Goomer, Magog, Madiah, Javan, Tubel, Meek, and Teras. They were really having to come up with names. They didn't have any names to choose from either. So, it was just like we got to make up something.

The sons of Goomemer were Ashkenaz, Rif Rifa, and Togeamar. The sons of Javan was Elisha, Tarses, Kdum, and Dodm. From and from these the coastland people spread in their lands, each in his own language by their clans and their nations. The sons of Ham, Kush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. Okay. The sons of Kush, Siba, Havala, Sapa, Rama, Sap. I don't know that one. the sons of Rama, Sheba, and Dan. Kush fathered Nimrod. All right, don't be a Nimrod. He was the I'm just kidding. Or do he was the first on the earth to be a mighty man.

Uh he was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Therefore, it is said like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord. Uh the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Eric, a uh a Akad and K in the land of Shannar. And from the land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rihuboth and Ka and Resin between Nineveh and Kala. And this is the great city. Egypt fathered Ludim, Ananim, Lehabim, and that guy. And then those others from whom the Philistines came. Interesting. These guys were all connected.

If you've studied ancient history at all, you know that that Mesopotamian area that that land there was that was the cradle of civilization. Uh you'll you'll see um you'll see later the mentioning of you'll see the you'll see the mentioning of Nineveh. uh you'll see and and and we start seeing Babel and we remember the the the Tower of Babel. We start seeing those things and we're seeing, oh, these are foundational cities for the world. So, if if I may, these guys get off a boat and they're like, "All right, I guess there's no one else.

We've got to repopulate." And so they get to it. They probably each had like 80 kids. I don't know, like maybe more. They lived forever still. Uh just just anecdotally, if you can follow with me, I know I gave you a chart, but this this is a different chart. I can only see it in my head because I didn't print this one, but it three generations. This is how long people lived. Okay? Three generations that could have talked to one another. Or Adam lived like 969 years or 964.

960 960 years. Uh his his birth and his death overlap with Methuselah who lived 969. And then Methuselah's Methuselah died the year of the flood. All right. But Shim was already born then. So these three guys could have talked face to face. It could have been three generations there and had the story or the traditions of earth. It's we don't think about it because they lived so long, but it wasn't like our great great great grandparents that we never met. They met them. This is kind of kind of odd.

Shim after the flood lived and was still alive when Abraham was alive. Uh if you read if you read the uh uh the I believe it's the oldest the oldest known like piece of literature um the name escapes me right now uh but it mentions the old man it's not in the Bible it's it's just a piece of literature uh from the Samaria from Sumer uh but it talks about the old man that survived the flood living up in the hills and so we find in every tradition and every every culture we find a story of the flood.

We find and and so we start, you know, you start looking at how history goes. And so as these guys that survived the flood, they come out and they have to establish society. They have to establish some sort of rules. Just take this. If we survived the flood and we had to establish some sort of society, how now this is a lot easier in a smaller like in a smaller classroom, right? Because we can we can kind of go back and forth with this. But how would we do that?

How how would we establish this is how we operate. This is how we act. Ask Siri. Siri, it thought I said Sarah, so we're good. How How would we do that? Because here's the thing, right? We think, how many of us have said, "Man, I wish I had 100 acres in Montana or Wyoming. World would just be all right. I wouldn't have to care what's going on." But then our kids are like, "Why are we in the middle of Wyoming? Can't do nothing here." And then they have to marry their cousin.

And then their kids are like, "Wait, what are we still doing in Wyoming? It's cold. It's -50 degrees here. Can we go somewhere else?" And it's like, "But this is a peaceful place." And they're like, "But it's also boring." if you haven't seen the other side of peace. So if if you take that and and think about it like this uh maybe more realistically and I'm very stereotypically I'm going to I'm going to use this um grand grandfathers that were that and and you guys probably had some that like fought in World War II um or or a war like that.

They came back. They bought their 40 acres, their 80 acres, their 100 acres, their farm, and they worked their farm till they died because they had seen, they looked evil in the face and said, "You know what? I we're confronting evil." All right? And they knew what the downside of humanity was. And so after they did that, did what their generation was supposed to do. They're like, "Let's build a peaceful place for us to rest. Let's build a peaceful place." World War II was was like for the most of it was like five years.

But it has such a huge impact upon us today and on our world today. It was five years of very intense hatred and evil and destruction that it it shaped us 80 years later. But it shaped that family. So you have grandpa that that built he he built his farm, built his family, lived in the same house for 40 years, had it paid for in like five, you know, like he his family's doing good. He sets his family up. His kids are doing well. His and then his grandkids go off to college.

They've had everything they've ever wanted because he wanted to build a peaceful society. And they go off to college and she's radicalized in some way or he's radicalized. The grandchild's radicalized. They come back and they argue over the supper table. Right. So his and if I may his point of view to I'm not trying to be political here. I don't I don't so I don't want to get political but you can imagine the sides of the argument if you will with me. Uh you can imagine the sides of okay his his point of view is grounded in no I have seen evil.

I've confronted it. I know what's good. hers comes are the grandchild's and I'm I'm using a granddaughter because granddaughters speak out a little more than grandsons maybe you know generalizing here but they they come from a point of view of well there was plenty and I have compassion and so now everyone needs to have plenty and so it comes from a point of if I may not lived experience but of living in past survival mode. So, so you've you've got this, if I may, in this, and I know I'm going around the world, but I'm going somewhere with this today.

Uh, you've got this, you've got this contradiction of just two generations of this budding of heads because the value system is not the same. The point of view, the lived experience is not the same. Grandpa, he fought hell and high water and his point of view is his point of view. And it it may just be about the pants he wears. You know, it it may not be about anything serious, but he's that's the way it's going to be. And you know, we all got that in us a little bit.

But then her point of view is, well, why don't we try this? Why don't we try this idea? Why don't we test this idea? Let's let's throw But it's not based in anything because it's not it it hasn't had to go through any sort of pressure. You following me? So, if I may, we're coming off the boat or these eight guys are coming off the boat and in one to two generations, they've lost the basis of their survival. They in in one to two generations, that generation that did not go through the flood does not fully understand the wickedness that was on the other side of the flood.

They hear the stories, but just to be honest, shared ex lived experience is really hard to share. I have never walked in your shoes. I don't understand why you do everything you do. You've never walked in mine. You don't understand why I do everything I do what I do. And then you get married and we're like, "Wait, what? Right. And then that's the that's the clashing of the two value systems of now we have to figure out how to have our how to how how do we walk together?

Uh and then let's just say we have that 100acre farm in Wyoming. How do we pass that to our kids? How and now this is this is a this is a class that's better designed for a smaller interactive setting. And so I'm sorry I can barely see you. But but if you would just think with me how because really very quickly these guys had a lot of kids. And I don't know how many of you have ever had a sibling but siblings can really fight it out.

They can really I you you name the you name the most heated arguments you've ever had and it's probably been with a sibling cuz ain't nobody backing down. Everybody's like, "All right, let's go. Love my sister to death, but me and her can we could fight like cats and dogs and we're too old for that." I tell her, "Hey, we're too old for this." And then we both still do it every now and then. We're like, "Wait a minute. We got to stop this." That's reality.

That's that's So, so these guys had a whole bunch of kids and and and then they're trying to figure out how to get along. Now, they were doing okay. We get to Genesis 11 and and we see uh now the whole earth at Genesis 11:1. Now, the whole earth had one language in the same words. Uh and the as the people migrated from the east, they found a plain land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and burn them thoroughly."

And they had bricks for stone and bit them in for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its tops to the heaven." We'll have to we'll have to correct that child. Let us make a name for ourselves lest we be dispersed over the whole over the face of the whole earth. Can I can I just stop right there? They they had a lived experience and so they're building they're they're building something to isolate themselves not out of protection even but out of hubris.

So we got to be careful. That was that was there. They're like let us let's let's do let's do contrary to what God had said. Now these were probably a generation or two removed from the flood but they knew enough about the flood to protect themselves. Let's build something high if we can't you know because the the flood was the most destructive thing. Let's build something up so that we can escape the waters. And they were going to. And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the children of man had built.

Verse 6. And the Lord said, "Behold, they are one people. They they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and nothing they purpose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go there and confuse their language so that they may not understand one another's speech." So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth. and they left off building the city. Therefore, the name of it was called Babel because the Lord confused the language of all the earth and the and from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

He confused their language and said, "You you've got to go." This the this idea that that they were they were building together. It was it's a very natural idea, but the hubris that came along with it of we're going to defy God. They had not learned the lessons that the people on the other side of the flood had to learn the hard way. And so instead of destroying them again, God said, "I'm just going to confuse their language." Now, when he did that, they dispersed each according to their language.

Now, this is this is just just theory here. This is not not able to prove in fact here but but at least one man's opinion that I've that I've read about was that all the different religions came from that moment from that place. All the different ways that people chose to worship came from traditions that that were started there. And so when they dispersed, everyone took a piece of that idea and they took it with them. So as they go, they still have to figure out how to order a society.

Now, if you think of the cowboys and Indians or if you just think of the Indians, they had a tribal chief, right? And so we have chiefs. Chiefs, that's the political leader. So we have a political leader. But then if I may, a political leader is focused on has a very has a very set parameters of focus. They have to focus on the macro or on the whole. Have to see and okay, this is direction. This is where we're going to get food from. This is where we're going to get uh this is where we're going to camp for the winter.

These these are these logistical things actually are big deal because if you're if you're a roving band of people and you choose the wrong place to winter, you die. That's I mean it's just that's just survival. So, you're constantly in this state of survival mode. You're constantly in this state of just one meal to the next, one meal to the next. That's hard. Now, any of you ever been just in survival mode? Maybe not just for food, but just one bill to the next. One bill to the next.

You're like, "Oh my lord, how do I get off this treadmill?" Imagine that and multiply it by like a thousand because if you don't if you if you get off of it, you die. So what that does is that then puts that very concentrated form psychologically that that pulls us down to the point of of very canned decisions. It's either yes or no. It there's no maybe. There's we do it or we die. We do it or we die. We do it or we die. And that's that's where these guys are living.

Well, that makes for a terrible transition of information from generation to generation. It's horrible. It's not good. I've seen this. I've seen this firsthand. Families that that live constantly and and and you can blame it on socioeconomic issues. You can blame it on other things. I've seen families that get completely stuck in survival mode. And that's that's the way they live. And it's wildly apparent if you're on the outside looking in, but it's really hard to see if you're on the inside looking out. That survival mode will eat you up because you're not making long form decisions.

You eat all the, if I may, if you're a hunter, uh, you you you kill all the deer in a given area because you need you need to eat. Well, if there was just enough, you could maybe create a herd of deer and you keep those. But that's a long form decision. You have to be out of decision, out of survival mode to get there. That's hard because you're just recreating society. Now, you guys with me? You following me? We're here. I'm I'm trying to create a world here and and and pardon me, but I I think through this way too much, so I may be uh I think through this a lot in a lot of different angles, but for tonight, this one, I'm I'm trying to lay the foundation for why why why would there be a priest?

What purpose does that serve? So you're living from from from lived experience to lived experience to lived experience, generation, generation, generation, and you're not learning anything. Is that fair? Uh if I may, I'm the the best the best example I think that we have of that were the Indians. They they had they lived from generation. They lived in a very sustenate society, a very survival uh a very just in the survival mode society. It was waring and fighting and and killing a lot. Hunting and gathering.

It was it was a very that's a very hard life. Now, there's whole backstory to that that I won't go into, but that's so when so when we arrive, we have, if I may, when when when Europeans arrive, we have guns and things that we've built because of excess that they never had the time to. They had the resources, but they didn't have time to develop those resources because they were in survival mode all the time. See, you see how that like over time that that builds out and that goes.

Now, that could be a we could we could stop there and I could just teach on economics for a while, but I'm not going to. This is not economic class. It's history class tonight. Y'all said y'all like history, so I'm glad. So, then we go on and we we come that we we we come to see that every as those those as those different people split and they went their different ways, we we start seeing this nice little timeline here. And I believe I gave that I believe I gave that to you guys in the back if if that was able to go up.

Um the timeline that you guys have on your So you see this now it starts in Mesopotamia. So that was where that was where Babel that's where uh the land of Oz was that's where the Calaldanss was. That's where uh that's where uh Shinar, the val the the plane of Shinar, that's where that's located at. It's it's the cradle of civilization. And you see that this this civilization was and and this is an approximate graph, but it it started here and one of the very first things they had was a god.

They created a god out of something. They they worshiped uh their religion was polytheistic. They had sky gods, fertility gods, storm gods, underworld deities. So they they had a their religion was based around the things they could see, which makes sense. If you don't have, hey, if you don't have your little app there that you can pull up and see where this tornado's coming in at, we very easily could fall back to praying to a sky god. I'm serious. That's that's that's tribalism. So, they were in tribalism.

uh in in anywhere in the world you'll find uh anthropology finds that tribes they worship some sort of nature god because it's it's bigger than what they can see. Does that make sense? Like it's if it's if they're on an island and a polollian island uh and there's a big volcano, guess what? They have a volcano god. Well, they can't control it. That's the biggest thing they can imagine. So that's their god. So then these guys develop they develop a society and and you hear a lot of a lot of uh a lot of the old testament is based out of this society of the chaldans.

It's somewhere around Sumer and and Babylon and and Assyria and that in that general region. That's where Abraham came out of. Uh, and so you see him coming out of that and but we don't hear a whole lot about everything of that. We don't we don't know a whole lot about that as far as biblically, but they had they had priests. They called N or Enzy. Um they oversaw ritual sacrifices or divinations and and things. And and then you start to see why this is a common each one of these Egypt it had uh it was a it was a god centered on gods like Rah or Osiris uh is Isis Horus.

Pharaoh is seen as the divine and then the priests were were given were were like uh delegates of Pharaoh in those societies. The reason why that came about though was generation to generation, you start running into how do I how do I communicate to not just the generation after me but to the generations after me that this this is why we operate and this is how we operate. This is our basis of operation. This is our value system. How do we why uh right now there are there's there's um oh lord there's a whole bunch of different things but how true this is I don't know saw it on the internet so god only knows right but there's an island and the natives in in in the in the Pacific that the natives on that island worship um some fighter pilot that had landed there because he brought them cool things when he landed there in World War II.

And so they still worship him, praying for him to come back. It's been 80 years. So they latched on to, if I may, they latched on to that idea that this fighter pilot was was their was their god. So like now I don't know the intricacies of whatever's happening there. Haven't been probably don't plan to go. Not a fighter pilot. So rough crowd tonight. Sorry guys. Rough crowd tonight. Thank you. Thank you, Jeff. Better late than never, right? Uh so so these guys are you're trying to figure out to solve the problem of how to transcribe in uh to to transmit learned experience or values from generation to generation.

And so each of these develop a priest. The reason is you have a political leader, but then you need someone that's interested in the individual, right? Let's just take present day. Donald Trump, if Donald Trump comes to our house, we have I'm really not really sure why he would come to our house, right? Like it's either a really good or a really bad day. Depends on which way the wind's blowing probably. and his hair. Got you on that one. Yes. Uh but if if the pastor comes to your house, right, that that makes a little more sense.

And so what happened was is as we develop and we understand that there is the need for a political leader, a chieftain, a tribe, there's also someone that is that needs to have the interest of individuals at heart that needs to understand the culture and the value system at a principled level. Because I'll just be honest with you, I don't understand everything that my grandfather understands. I mean, my grandpa grew up in North Miss and my grandma grew up in North Mississippi. They worked on the farm, guys.

Like, they picked cotton. Like, they knew how they know how to plow with mules. Only thing I know how to do with a mule is stay away from it. I mean, really and truly, but I'm not that far removed from that. And chances are some of your family, and it may have been a greatgrandfather, but like my grandparents are still alive. They still have that knowledge of how to go about that, but I don't. And and to be honest, I've worked on a farm. I don't really want to have that experience.

That's a lot of hard work. I mean, you're just up about to die. I listen here, Tyler. I know you're I know I know you're trying to do this whole homesteading thing. I know your wife talked you into it. We all know. It's all right. We get it. That's a lot of work. I mean, it's not really for me, but you can survive off of it. The principles learned, if I may, the principles learned in early to bed, early to rise makes man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

If the youth were in here tonight, they would be like, "What's that?" Marcus is back there going, "Dude, you're just speaking in riddles. I don't even know, dude. I'm Tonight's pick on Marcus night, isn't it? So, I'm sorry, man. Thank you for your help. It It makes sense when you only have so much daylight to work with. But when you can, if I may, when you can work remotely, Dakota, what's it matter? But the principle has to be you got to work. You got to be diligent.

You have to do now to pass that along. It's really hard for grandpa to say, "You need to be up at 4:00 a.m. so you can milk the cows." It's like, I don't have any cows. If I did, I'd sell them, but I don't want to milk them. Lauren thought about getting a milk cow. Got to milk that thing every day, sometimes twice a day. There is a certain level of diligence in knowing that if we if I may, the reason why we have societal problems that we have now is because we don't have the same pressures as we did before.

And you're like, well, yeah, I've got a lot of pressure, but it's different. You don't have near the pressure that your grandparents had. If you don't get the if you don't get the cotton picked, you ain't eating all winter and we die. It's like, why is everything you die? Because that's life. If you don't show up to work tomorrow, guess what? You get a sick day. That's awesome. That's great. But if you don't get the corn in, you die. I mean, it's just it's just one or the other.

It's like there was no in between. And so translating that from generation to generation and there's a whole bunch of ridiculous things you could go down, but translating that you then you start getting and you see that every one of these civilizations then they start to they they develop a priesthood and that priesthood focuses on different things. Um, in the Indis Valley, uh, there were the Indis Valley one there, there's not a lot known about it, but it says likely fertility cults. Well, I'm just going to tell you, Indis Valley is in India.

Man, they set that principle up. There's like more people in India than anywhere else in the world. Yeah. Like 1.8 1.6 billion people. uh they had priests there uh in and in and in in the other parts of it there was Hinduism and that that focused on be taking care of the the world around you. Well, guess what? When you have the religion before you that is focused on a fertility cult and having as many kids as possible. Guess what you have to do next? You have to take care of the things around you or there's nothing left.

There's there's a progression of these things. Uh you get in China there was ancestor worship because they wanted to make sure that uh the the elders were taken care of. There's uh you you get on down there's there's the in the classical Greece culture there's there's the polytheistic view of there was a god for everything and this the Olympian gods they had they had priests and priestesses but nothing super specific and it it just kind of varied because guess what they had they the the Greeks were they they were one of the most advanced civilizations they had everything they needed so they didn't have to have a basis a a if I may they didn't have to have a hardcore value system.

So you find in this you can go through and look at all these different ones. The Persians, the medieval Europe that that starts getting into Christianity after after the after the ancient Israel, the monotheist. Most all of these were, if I may add, were polytheistic. Every one of these because mankind that's our natural it's it's like our default mode is to believe in multiple gods. Well, you come along to ancient Israel and you have one God, Yahweh, and he is all. He said, 'I am that I am.

It's like the most counter cultural thing of all time is to believe in one God. I just want you to know that the most countercultural thing. Now you you go through these these different things and you see that that the practical and and I'm trying to analyze this from the practical because I want us to understand there is a principled need to understand our value system and the further we get removed from a shared experience like World War II or the Great Depression or everyone riding their bicycles at night till till the lights go off.

Our shared experiences now are nothing. We have no shared experiences. Your background is wildly different than my background. Your your Some of us grew up in the middle of a city. Some of us grew up in the middle of nowhere. Some of us grew up in the suburbs. Some of us grew up in God only knows where. My poor wife doesn't even know what directions are because she just grew up everywhere. She has no point of reference for directions. I don't know if I don't know that growing up in one place would have helped her at all either.

I I'm not really sure. But in that we all come from different things. So then we have to if I may, we have to establish a common value system. Now they established priest as value as as the as the way to carry that value system on. Here's the thing about that is man does not have a moral code. Man does not have a set a universal value system. There is no such thing as a universal moral as universal morality. I'll tell it to you this way.

If if if there is a if there is a uh one way to know that is is the same person that says no we have to we we can't you know we can't fight this war ah that's murder you murderer will then go have an abortion or pay or if it's a guy pay for abortion. It's like wait a minute that's not a value system that's a personal preference. You can't build a society based on personal preference. You have to build it based on a value system.

Now all of these different they had a start and a stop. They had a start and a stop. You see these you see these the way they go. The Israeli uh the Israeli one morphed into Christianity because that's where Christianity came from. And the reason and that was ancient Israel. But the reason that it's different if I may is man will choose a value system. But man's value system will lead to what? Destruction. What was what were all these different ones? polytheistic human sacrifice in Meso America, ancestor worship, fertility cults, goddess worship, nature worship.

That's man. That's man's value system. It doesn't matter if that's if that our value if our values are based upon what we create, it will morph into bad. And if you don't believe me, just just sit down and try and write out your moral code, your moral code. Try and write it out. And then let's compare because what you think is morality and what I think is morality are going to be two different things. Wildly different things. We're not going to and and you're going to be offended at me because what you say is is just normal for humans to think because of based on the way you perceive life and the way I perceive life there.

Those are going to two wildly different sources. And then the guy that survived war and that's that's lived in the foxhole, so to speak, his point of view is going to be like it's dog eat dog. Comes down to it, we're just going to fight it out, buddy. It's like, all right, there has to be something there. There has to be something that says this is the foundation of who we are. This is the foundation of how we act. This is transgenerational, transcultural. This is how this is the fundamental way that humans should react and interact.

Genesis chapter 9 verse 6 it says uh it talks about this very simply God says if a man kills or spills another man's blood by by another man shall he be killed. It's the death penalty. And he he didn't say because man killed another man. He didn't base it on man. He based it on himself. He said because man is an image bearer of God. He based it on who he is. The morality, the the code that that we live by, the code that we we have to build our lives upon.

The whole reason that we're going through the temple is to revisit the fundamental principles of the faith to understand I am not built but I'm not built on man. I am built what is it? Christ alone. I know I haven't even talked about Christ tonight. I I I've tried to break this down in into a history lesson, so to speak, into a anthropological study. But the understanding is is man will lead us to certain steps. We'll all get to a place in a secular mindset. We'll all get to a place each each civilization will get to a place to have something they worship or something that they say we this transcribes this is our these are our values.

But the the end of those values is death and the end of the values of Christ is life. in Leviticus chapter 9 verse number five. And this is the foundational scripture that I'm going to be teaching out of this month. It says verse 5 says, "And they brought what Moses commanded in front of the tent of meeting and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord." Verse six, "And Moses said, "This is the thing that the Lord commanded you to do that the glory of God may appear to you."

And then Moses said to Aaron, "Draw near to the altar and offer your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and for the people and bring the offering of the people and make atonement for them as the Lord has commanded." He set Aaron up after he had given the Ten Commandments. He set Aaron up after Aaron offered an offering for his sin and his burnt offering. Aaron could not, if I may, Aaron could not take himself into this. This was not about Aaron.

As Paul writes later, it's I what I I I do not magnify myself. I magnify my office. He done he put everything in place. God laid it in place so that the high the office of the high priest was not to magnify the man. In fact, it was to bring the man lower and it was to magnify the office. The point of it, the point being is he had to make an offering for himself and for the people. He he he he didn't just have an offering come to him.

He didn't just have something come to him. He did not set the law. He did not set the the mode of operating. He did not set the foundation of their culture. He said he was just the mediator. He was just the one that said, "You know what? You know what, Grandpa? I know you've been through the foxhole. I I know I know you survived the war and I understand the principles that you're living by. And you know what, granddaughter? I know the the world that you grew up in and the point that you have and and the ideas that you have and and your point of view, your if I may lived experience, I know those things, but let's let's push those aside and let let the word of God be our foundation.

If I may, we are all guilty of this. We're all guilty of my lived experience. I've said this and it's hard and sometimes our lived experience is good. Sometimes it teaches us, but what's most important is what God says day in and day out. What does say the word of God? The foundation that we are founded on as a culture, as a people is not because we made up a priesthood. It's not because we we said, you know what, we just we just need a place to go sit for a little bit.

It was a place to help to help have the statutes and the principles and the line upon line and the precepts upon precepts of God Almighty to cover generation to generation because it's real hard. It's real hard for one person to do that. It's real hard if you if you just think about it. If you set your own world up on your farm in Wyoming of a 100 acres, how long before that becomes so complex and the interactions become so hard that nobody can that that no one can talk to anyone.

That's it happens. How long? If I may, I'm I'm coming to a close. If you'll stand with me, we'll pray and uh we'll have worship time. I I appreciate I appreciate you understanding me laying the foundation tonight. But I want us to understand that every way, everything we act upon, everything we do, every action we take, we have to be founded from one point and that's from the principles of God. If you would, would you lift your hands with me real quick? Jesus, we love you.

God, we thank you so much for your kindness, for your goodness, and your mercy. God, we are but men and women. We are we are your creation. We're your servants. We're your people. We're just trying to figure out life, God. We're just trying to get through. We're trying to do what we're supposed to do. We're here on a Wednesday night trying our best to to understand your divine will and your divine plan. And God, I pray, Lord, I pray, God, as we study your word, God, as we dive into who you are, God, I pray, Lord, that you would help us, you would guide us, you would direct us, you would allow the Holy Ghost to move upon us, you would allow the anointing power of the Holy Ghost to change us.

God, help us, God, to not build our lives upon ourselves, to not build our lives upon our own values and our own ideas and our own lived experiences, God. But God, I pray, Lord, that you would help us, you would guide us, you would direct us, God. Help us, God, to build our lives upon you alone, on nothing else. Help us, God, to build it solidly and firmly upon your word. Jesus, we thank you. And God, we praise you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen.

If you guys about 10 minutes, we'll have worship time if you just stick around. Thank you all for your attention. I got a song and I'll sing you loud pouring out. We're going to dance. His kingdom is here. Oh, we're going to struggles. Lord, we're dealing with relational struggles, Jesus. We're searching for direction, God. We're hungry for relationship with you, Jesus. We're hungry, Lord, to be closer to you, God. Lord, we come with every different angle and different needs tonight, Jesus. I pray that you'd help us here tonight.

In Jesus' name, that I might be more like you. That I might be made more into your image in Jesus name.

Would you put your hands together in the room and love on him for a moment? Come on, give him some praise in the room because he's worthy of it. Hallelujah. Jesus, you are worthy. You're worthy. Can we take that spirit of worship into our prayer? We've got some needs connected to the body tonight. And I wonder if we can take this same atmosphere and if we can touch the virtue, if we can let virtue flow, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, you've been so good to us.
