Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Nothing Wrong with Leftovers and Hand-Me-Downs
- Social media makes it easy to compare ourselves to picture-perfect lives and feel like failures, but there is no shame in hand-me-downs or leftovers.
- As a single mother for many years, nearly every piece of furniture in her house was a hand-me-down, and it still gave her family a place to sit and eat together.
- Yesterday's coat is today's protection: yesterday's investment, sacrifice, and preparation become today's provision, and those who went before paved the way.
- A leftover is a remnant — a part that remains, a surviving group — and there is a remnant that still loves the Lord, keeps His commandments, and holds to the testimony of Jesus.
Ask for the Old Paths
- Jeremiah calls God's people to stand in the ways, ask for the old paths — the good way — walk in them, and find rest for their souls.
- The old paths are not wooden pews or hymnals but the messages preached, lessons taught, and prayers prayed by those who went before, which have kept us and brought us to this day.
- Modern culture calls the Word of God and attending church irrelevant, but the Word is as relevant today as ever, and we need the church — the body of Christ needs each other.
- Choose to be kingdom-minded over culture-controlled, and choose this day whom you will serve.
Scriptures: Jeremiah 6:16
Jesus Is the Way
- Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" — no one comes to the Father but by Him.
- Jesus is also the light of the world; those who follow Him do not walk in darkness but have the light of life.
- The world urges everyone to choose their own path and do it their way, but that is not God's plan.
- She testifies from her own life: she once stepped off the old path and did things her own way, and it was prayer that brought her back to living for Jesus.
Scriptures: John 14:6; John 8:12
Run with the Cloud of Witnesses
- The popular anthem "I did it my way" collides with Proverbs: there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.
- Hebrews pictures us surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, calling us to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us and run the race set before us with patience.
- The faithful who went before — including godly women who impacted this church — fought temptation and discouragement, stayed on the old path, and are now cheering us on.
- Whatever we go through, Jesus has already borne it and someone else has already experienced it, so we can run the race with joy.
Scriptures: Proverbs 14:12; Hebrews 12:1
A Praying Mother's Prayers
- At twelve years old she was diagnosed with an incurable disease, and years later, as a young mother with her health failing, she was at death's door.
- Her mother drove her to the emergency room, carried her adult daughter through the doors in her arms, and all the while was praying — carrying her not only into the hospital but to the throne room, to the feet of Jesus.
- A praying mama, grandma, aunt, pastor, or pastor's wife is why many are alive and in church today, and we should be thankful for those who chose the old path.
- Yet no one else's prayers can get us into heaven: each person must have their own relationship with Jesus Christ, and our obedience births freedom for generations we may never meet.
Prayers Never Die
- Her grandmother, a pastor, preached Acts 2:38 everywhere she went — repent, be baptized in Jesus' name, and receive the Holy Ghost — and that same message is what a dark world needs in 2025.
- She prayed for fifty years for her only son, a prodigal who had backslidden, and died without seeing the answer.
- Months after her death, terminally ill, he said, "I want to come home," was brought back to her house, and returned to God — proof that prayers never die, so keep praying for your prodigals.
- In Revelation the prayers of all the saints rise as incense before the throne; the prayers we pray today over our children and grandchildren will live on long past us.
Scriptures: Acts 2:38; Revelation 8:3-5
Carry the Remnant On
- God is calling this generation to take up the mantle: keep praying, keep showing up, keep testifying of Jesus, and teach our children that Jesus is the only way.
- God takes those filled with His Spirit and makes them new creatures; the old path leads into a new relationship and a new life.
- It is up to us to push back the darkness and shine the light, because generations are coming behind us and need to know the way.
- She closes by calling the church to the altar — let us be the prayer warriors who build altars in our homes and pray for generations to come.

Thank you, Pastor Sloan. Thank you, church. Surprise. It's me. I know we have covered Mother's Day today, but once again, before you're seated, I'm going to say it one more time. Happy Mother's Day to all you moms. We are honored that you're here with us today. Uh I do covet your prayers. I do believe that God gave me a word. And you can be seated. Some of you already sitting down because you know me. I'm chatty. Um, but I believe God gave me a word. He gave me something.
Um, and laid something on my heart early on. I want to thank my pastors, Pastor Sloan, Sister Sloan, and Sister Mandy, our ladies director, for giving me this privilege to speak to you today. And it's something that I do not take lightly standing here today. Matter of fact, I wish you could feel how lightly I don't take it. Uh but it's a a huge responsibility and I hope that whatever I have to say today will speak to your heart. It has already spoken to mine. Um so much has been covered um in this service up until this point and it's been confirmation from what I feel like God had already spoken to me and given me.
And I thank God for the confirmation. I thank God for the power of the Holy Ghost that speaks. And we have been feeling uh the Holy Ghost in this place today. And I want to go ahead and I'm just going to dive right in for the next few minutes. I'm not going to keep you long. I know it's Mother's Day. I know you've got plans and I know there's a lot going on, but what a beautiful service we've had up to this point. And what a beautiful day to uh Yes.
Amen. What a beautiful day to dedicate that sweet, precious baby boy. What a beautiful day to do that on this Mother's Day. And I reflect on my own being a mom and uh my own mom that I'm thankful that she's still here with me and grandmothers that have gone on. And it's hard with all the things that have transpired up here today. It's really hard not to get up here and be a little on the weepy side. I've been back there crying and I'm thinking, I've got to pull it together.
Uh but sometimes this day does bring lots of emotions because sometimes we're here and it has already been mentioned maybe your your home life you were not raised uh maybe you were raised in a broken home uh a broken relationships maybe you did not have that healthy relationship with your mom. Um but maybe just maybe today you can understand that you are not alone and we are here today in the presence of Jesus and that's what matters. You know, society, more specifically, social media has a way of making it kind of easy for us to compare ourselves to everyone else.
And I am not up here talking against social media. I'm on Facebook and I'm on Instagram and those are my limits. I cannot go beyond that because I cannot handle it. So, I do I'm not up here talking about against social media. But if you've been on social media at any point, you understand that it's very easy to look into other people's lives, or at least what they're portraying, and it can seem so picture perfect if you're not meal prepping, if you're not meal planning and cooking picture perfect, Pinterestw worthy meals every single day, or if you're not sharing those perfectly filtered Instagram photos of the perfect family dressed in all the the newest and the test, then you can feel like a failure before you even get started.
And heaven forbid that you dress your family or your children in hand-me-downs or you serve leftovers. You can, but you can feel like, my goodness, you're a failure. That the social media elite will make you feel like, what are you doing? Can I just say today that there is nothing wrong with handme-downs and leftovers. Nothing at all. So if you're if you're one of those moms or one of those I was Jordan's already Jordan had me crying. Lord goodness gracious. Yes. I was a single mom until she was 17 years old.
I know a little bit about hand-me-downs and leftovers as a single parent. Matter of fact, for several years, there was not a piece of furniture in my house that was not a handme-down. And you know what? It gave me a place to sit. It gave me a table to sit at and have my meal and our meals together. So, there's nothing wrong with anything new. It's not If you can go out and buy brand new furniture, well, then thank the Lord. That is a blessing. But I'm here to talk about just a little bit that there's nothing wrong with leftovers and hand-me-downs.
Uh, so there's no shame in that. But there's nothing wrong with new clothes. There's nothing wrong with new furniture, but that's not what I want to talk about. Let's not ignore the value of those handme-downs. Yesterday's coat. Yesterday, did you know ever know anybody that would sew that your clothes? My mom sewed our clothes for a little while. Talked about it earlier today with somebody. I can't even sew on a button. But my mom would sew our clothes. And I have two I'm the oldest of two girls.
And I can still hear that sewing machine at midnight just humming away. And somebody worked diligently to clothe and dress you. Yesterday's coat, yesterday's fabric. It's what's it's it's today's protection. Don't disregard the value of the leftovers. Yesterday's investment, yesterday's sacrifice, yesterday's preparation is today's provision. I'm thankful for those that have gone before us and they paved the way for where we are today. There's something to be said about what was done yesterday for today's for today's provision. Someone paved the way for me to be here right here standing where I am today.
And I'm thankful for that. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Does anybody understand where I'm going? Let's just look a little closer at leftovers. If you look in the dictionary, uh, it's defined as something that remains. And if you look at the synonyms, I like to I like to dissect words. If you go ahead and look a little further, uh, for the synonyms for leftovers, there was one synonym that just kind of jumped out of the page at me, and it was remnant. H remnant.
Now remnant is defined as a part remaining a member remaining a surviving group unsold goods. I declare in this place today on this Mother's Day that there is a remnant like those saints that have gone on before us of people that remains that will love the Lord that will keep his commandments that have the testimony of Jesus and they're holding firmly to it and they're buying this truth and they're selling it not the remnant. Don't disregard the value of the leftovers. Those prayers that were prayed yesterday, they're they're keeping you today.
They've brought you to this place today. Those messages that were preached yesterday, those are the those Sunday school lessons that were taught yesterday, they have kept you here and they've brought you to this place today. Don't dismiss the value of the old paths. So often we hear the old past and as soon as somebody's going to talk about it, preach about it, teach about it, we automatically think that we're going to do away with indoor plumbing or we're going to bring back the himnels or we're going to replace the padded seats with the old wooden pews.
That's not the old path that we're talking about. If you look at Jeremiah chapter 6 and verse 16, thus sayaeth the Lord, stand ye in the ways and see and ask for the old paths. It's the good way. Walk therein. That's some instruction right there. And ye shall find rest for your souls. the old paths. We're not talking about what the things that I just mentioned, but let's not disregard the messages that have been preached before us. I can still hear and see some of the old preachers, the old Sunday school teachers that prayed for me, that believed God for me.
And you know what? You've been prayed for. And maybe you were raised in a family. No, you don't understand my story, Stacy. You don't understand. I wasn't raised in a Christian home. I I don't even know what it was like. The only time I heard God was when someone was cursing. I can stand here and testify that regardless of who you are and where you've been and what your background is, you have been prayed for by somebody. We might not have known your name and we might not have known where you come from or what you look like.
We may not have known what this day was going to look like, May 11th, 2025, but you are here as a result of someone's prayer that they prayed yesterday. You're here today walking in the blessings because somebody prayed and made a way for you be to be here today. So let's walk in that way in the old pastas. Modern culture and society it'll say there are some things that are irrelevant. It's irrelevant. The word of God it's not relevant. It's I have literally heard people say it's just an old book written by a bunch of old dead guys and it is not relevant for me today.
Seek the old paths. The word of God is relevant in 2025 just as much as it was in the days of old. Here's another thing that people want to say that they don't need anymore. Attending church. Now, we all know at CAC the church is the body of Christ. Look at your neighbor and say, "You're the church." We have a place of worship, but there is something going on in our society and in our culture that says, "I don't need the church. I don't need to sit on a pew or on a padded seat.
I don't need the church. It's not relevant. I'm It's not needed. Seek the old paths. You need the church. You need the body of Christ. We need each other. We need this truth. We need his word. It's relevant today. It's relevant today. Don't get so wrapped up by the things that are accepted by by modern culture that we ignore what's accepted by Christ. We need to follow his way. He is the way. Choose to be kingdom- minded over being culture controlled. Give me the old path.
Choose you this day whom you're going to serve this day. This is the good way. There are those that have gone before us and they steadfastly they walked the old paths. They were fighting the darkness. They were spreading the good news of Jesus. They were doing it in spite of being persecuted and all the things. And sometimes I wonder what could I do? What could I do today if I was being persecuted? Do I have what it takes to stand? Do I have what it takes to continue on in this on this path?
The scriptures already been um used and train up a child in the way he should go. Jesus is the way. Jesus is that way. when he is old, he will not depart from it. We know that Jesus is the way. That's the way we choose. It's the old paths. John 14 and six. Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the father but by me. Talking about the way, talking about the path. John chapter 8 and verse 12.
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world. He that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. We live in a world that screams, "Do it your way. Choose your own path. Do it. Do your own thing." But can I tell you that is not God's plan. Because when you follow your way, there's destruction. I know what it's like to step away from the old path. I know what it's like to step back and say, "You know what?
I was raised this way." And I'm thankful for my godly heritage. I'm thankful that I am fourth generation Pentecost. I am. But there was a time that I walked away, Brother Rob, and I got off that old path and I did things Stacy's way. And I can testify to you, young people, children, listen to me. It's the old path. I'm thankful that prayer's got me back on the way, back on the right path, and I'm living for Jesus today. Jesus is the way. Don't stray from that path.
But we live in a world, one of the saddest songs I think I've ever heard. And I think it was made famous probably first of all by Frank Sinatra, more so Elvis Presley. And just the title itself is sad. I did it my way. And I'm pretty sure that was the anthem of their life. I did it my way. But here's what the word of God says in Proverbs 14:12. There is a way which seemth right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
God is calling his church just like the church of old the saints that have gone before us. Calling us today in 2025 to stand up in our faith and remembering the words of Hebrews chapter 12 and verse one. Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which does so easily beset us. And let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Whatever we go through, Jesus has already bore.
Someone else has already experienced. and we can throw off all the things that hinder us and we can run the race with joy. We can we we've got a great cloud of witnesses. You know what that is? That's the saints that have gone on before us. You'll see. And and I I had so many pictures that I wanted to use today. But there are three people that either directly or indirectly has impacted CAC. my grandmother, Sister Sloan, and Sister Austin. Those ladies right there, those are those that's part of the cloud of witnesses.
Those are the ones that are cheering us on today in 2025. They ran their race. They stayed faithful to the old path. They stayed in this way. You think they didn't fight off temptation? You think that they didn't have a hard time? Do you think they didn't fight discouragement? Oh, yes, they did. I would say that they probably had some things a whole lot harder than we do in 2025. I'm thankful for ladies like this that prayed for you and I. I'm thankful. And you have people in your life.
I'm thinking of so many people right now, men and women that have prayed and they have planted the seed in you and me today in this church. and we're reaping the benefits of pray prayers that were prayed yesterday. Don't disregard leftovers and hand-me-downs. I'll take the message that they preached yesterday. I will take those prayers that they prayed for me yesterday because I'm walking in those blessings today. I'm walking in an answered prayer today. I know what it's like for somebody to pray for me to get me off up off of a deathbed.
I've got a mom that prayed for me. I can remember. Can I tell you a story? Can I tell you a story? I was um and some of you have heard this but when I was very young, I was 12 years old. I was diagnosed with an incurable disease, Crohn's disease. Few years of having that things were not looking very good. I was battling for my life. I was then a mom. I had had Jordan. She was about 18 months old and my health had declined so much and I was really at death's door and I was in Montagle.
We were in Mont Eagle with my family with my mom and I became very bad and my mom chose instead of um calling the ambulance that she would drive me to Murphusboro which is where my doctor was because she thought that she could drive just as quickly as the ambulance. And I will go I'm here to testify that she can and she does and she and at one point I was in and out of consciousness and I would look at the speed limit and I'm thinking I'm going to die either way.
I'm going to die either way. But that was in 1992. But when we when she pulled in, I'm pretty sure on two wheels up into the emergency room doors and she ran over. and sister salon. I don't remember if she shut off the car or what, but she slung my door open and she scooped her adult daughter up in her prayers up in in her arms. And then she carried me, she run went running into those emergency room doors. But the whole time that that we're traveling, the whole time that she's carrying me in her arms into that hospital, I hear my mom praying.
My mom is shedding tears and she is crying. And I'm so glad that I had a mom that knew how to pray. Not only did she carry me into that hospital, she carried me to the throne into the throne room. She carried me and she placed me at the feet of Jesus. And that is why I'm here today. That is why some of you are here today because you had a praying mama. You had a praying grandma. You had a praying aunt or a pastor or a pastor's wife.
And we need to be thankful for those things. We need to be thankful that they had a relationship with Jesus. We need to be thankful that they had chose the old path and understood that Jesus is the way. We've got to take up that that mantle. We've got to pick up the responsibility. It's up to us. I have to choose for myself this day whom I'm going to serve. My grandmother's prayer might have kept me, but they can't get me into heaven. That's up to me.
I've got to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. You've got to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. I'm thank It's our obedience. It's the obedience of our the ones that have gone on before us, the saints of old. But our obedience, if we will walk this path, it's our obedience that's birthing freedom for generations. You may never meet. Keep going. Keep praying. Keep showing up. Heaven is backing you. The voices that are no longer with us physically, they're cheering us on. Your obedience, it isn't just about you.
My obedience to God and his word, it's not just about me. It's about your bloodline. It's about those children. It's about those babies. So, you know what? Give me the old path because I know where the old path is going to lead me. It's going to lead me to the foot of the cross. It's going to lead me to Jesus. It's going to lead me to living a life of victory. It's going to one day it's going to lead me to stand in front of Jesus.
And I'm going to hear him say, "Well done, thou good and thou faithful servant." That old path is going to lead to a gate of pearl and a street of gold. That old path is what we need. Jesus is the way and he is your way. He We've got to choose Jesus today. I'm thankful for the oath. I'm thankful for the prayers that were prayed yesterday. because they're keeping us today. But what are we doing? What are my children going to remember? What are my grandchildren going to remember?
Are they going to be able to stand and say, "Oh, I remember Nana." You know, maybe she's not here anymore and it's just her voice that I can barely remember. But I know she kept praying. She kept showing up. She kept testifying of Jesus, the goodness of Jesus. She kept telling me, "I need to stay in the church. I need to stay close to Jesus because he's the only way. There was a time I turned my back on the truth. There's a time I turned my back on the church, but there were people that prayed.
You got a prodigal in your in your bloodline. You got a prodigal in your family. Do you know somebody that's walked away from Jesus? You keep praying. You know why? Because those prayers are they never die. They never die. They're floating around heaven. It's in the throne room and it's just a matter of time that says, "You know what? They've prayed and they've prayed and but that answer's coming. That answer is coming. Your prodigals are coming home. We're going to see them fill the altars. You keep praying because somebody kept praying for you.
Somebody kept praying for me. And that's why we are here. You keep praying, Sister Renee. You keep praying. I'm so glad that prayers never die. Perhaps it was your grandparents, your parents, an aunt, an uncle, a Sunday school teacher. You could go on and on. Maybe it was just that quiet little saint that never you you barely knew she was there. But she was a prayer warrior. He was a prayer warrior. He was praying not just for the church for today. He was praying for the church for tomorrow and generations to come.
Because this is about that's the thing about those ladies. They could see beyond themselves. I can testify about my grandma just a little bit. If you heard a message behind a pullpit, and she was a preacher, she was a pastor. She was my pastor. But whatever you heard behind the pull pit, you're going to hear at the post office from grandma. Wherever she was, you were going to hear Acts 2:38. You know why? Because that's the old path. Because that is the way. That's what you need.
She understood that you've got to repent and be baptized in Jesus name. And she said, "You've got to have the Holy Ghost. You don't understand. And it's the joy of the Lord. You got to have it. And that's the same message in 2025 that this world that's out in darkness needs to hear. Choose the Oaths. Choose the OPAS. Those prayers, those prayers never die. You know why? I know. You know why? I know. One reason I know I'm going, and if you've heard this story, bear with me and be patient.
talking about those prodals. My grandmother uh Grandma Hedges, she passed away in August 2012. She had a her firstborn child was my uncle Leland. It was her only son. And he was raised in the church. He was filled with the Holy Ghost as a a young child. And but when he got married and they moved away, he was in his early 20s and he backslid. And my grandmother, she prayed day and night for everybody. She covered everybody in prayer. But she would pray for Leland. She prayed for her only son, her prodigal boy, to come home for 50 years.
50 years. And she passed away in August 2012. And guess what had not happened? My uncle Leland had never come back to the church. Oh yeah. He'd visit when he would come in. He he always lived out of state. Um six months almost to the day after my grandmother passed, my uncle Leland was diagnosed with terminal 4 cancer. And I remember feeling the weight of that, thinking, "Oh my goodness, he can't die." You know, he he's not he's not ready. He's not saved. He's not made it back to the church.
We begin to pray. And then one day, he was living he and my aunt were living in Arizona. Things were not good. And he called my mom, his baby sister, who he talked to once or twice every day forever. He said, he said these words, "I want to come home." See, because he was terminal. He wasn't going to be here long. So, they loaded him up and they brought him from Arizona back to Montagle, Tennessee, into my grandmother's home, where that's where my parents live. hospice was there.
But I will never forget myself walking into my what was just a few months earlier was my grandmother's living room. He was seated in my grandmother's chair and he had his hands lifted. I know that those prayers never die. She didn't get to see the prayer answered, but those prayers that she prayed for 50 years, they come to pass. Why? I choose the old path. I'm going to stay this way. I'm going to keep praying. And in 15 years that she didn't get to see it here, but one glorious day, one day over on the other side, there's going to be a son that runs and finds his mama.
He made it home. You don't quit praying. You don't quit believing. Let's stay in this way. God's got something for the church of 2025. And you know what it is? It's the old path. Give me the old path. Give me those prayers. Teach us to pray like those that have gone on before us. Teach me to pray and fast the way they did. Teach me to preach and teach the word the way they did. They lived this life because they found out a long time ago that Jesus is faithful.
Jesus is faithful and he will never let you down. Those prayers, Revelation 8:3-5, and this scripture, oh my goodness, it gets me. And another angel came and stood at the altar having a golden censor. And there was given unto him much incense that he should offer it with prayers of all the saints of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. and the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angel's hands.
And the angel took the sensor and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth. Don't you dare stop praying. Those prayers do not die. Those saints of old may be gone and we can't see them. I can't sit across the table with my grandma sharing a cup of coffee with an open Bible. But I tell her prayers are still being answered. There are people in your lives, your parents, your grandparents, those that have gone on before, they have prayed the prayers and they don't die.
And you know what the good news is? The prayers you pray today, they're not going to die. You pray over your children. You pray over your grandchildren. We pray over your future because those prayers will live on way past us. Prayers from faithful saints of old. They were just seeds of hope, seeds of faith and resilience that were being planted for the salvation of future generations. Look at just this front row right here. Pastor, you had a praying mama that prayed for your healing and you were healed and you met a wife.
You got your wife and you had some children and they got married and they had some children and look look what happens. That's the beautiful story of knowing who Jesus is. That's the beautiful That's the beautiful news. The good news of Jesus is that he will take you and your children and your children's children and generations to come and you keep staying in this way. Jesus is the way. Keep teaching your babies about Jesus. Sunday school teachers, even if you're not a parent, this applies to you because we are the bride of Christ.
We need to look at our children in this place. We need to look at our young people. You need Jesus. Go ahead, brother Sam. be tough on them because they need the old path. You need to know it comes from a place of love. You know why? Cuz one day, one day we're going to stand before Jesus. And I want us all to be in heaven together. I want us to join the saints of old that have gone before us. And I want us to stand at the throne at the feet of Jesus and cry holy, holy, holy together.
I want us to do that. I'm thankful for leftovers and hand-me-downs, but I'm walking in a new way. I'm what those old paths, it leads into a new relationship and a new you. Cuz God takes you and when you're filled with his spirit, you become a new creature. You become a new person. So, we keep living this life. Don't God has a purpose for us today in this hour. He needs us to carry on the remnant, those that remain. I have no idea how long I've been going.
Not a clue. In closing, I'm going to turn this over, pastor, because I really am clueless. I don't know. 10 minutes, 20, 30, don't know. God's calling us in this hour. He's separating us for this hour. It's up to us to push back the darkness. It's up to us to share the light with it. There's a world out there and they're looking at the church. You don't know it. You don't think that's true. How many of we had been baptized just this year? I'm telling you, the numbers keep climbing.
You know why? Because the church keeps shining. Because the church keeps going. I'm going to stay faithful. Because there are generations to come. They're coming up behind us. And I want them to know the way. The way is Jesus. Can we stand all over this place? As pastor comes, as brother Don is coming. Let's lift our hands and say, "Lord, let me be the prayer warrior. Let me be the one, dear God, that will pray for generations to come, for the prodigals, for my children. Let me be the one that's going to build an altar in my home.
Let me be the one, dear God, that'll show children and young people that this is the way, that you are the way. God, we trust you today.
