Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Three Texts That Tell Us Why He Came

  • He opens with Luke 19:10: the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost.
  • A reader gives 1 Timothy chapter 1: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom Paul counted himself chief.
  • A second reader gives 2 Corinthians 5:18-19: God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not imputing their trespasses, and has committed the word of reconciliation to us.
  • He thanks God for reconciliation, for the seeking and the saving, and for coming for sinners of all grades.
  • His opening prayer asks that the results of Christ's coming be evident in this service and in the hearts of those present and watching online.

Scriptures: Luke 19:10; 1 Timothy 1; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19

What's the Reason for Jesus?

  • Jesus is not only the reason for Christmas; he is the reason for the church, for ministry, and for this service.
  • But a follow-up question follows: what is the reason for Jesus — why did he come?
  • A recent Lifeway research poll found most respondents had no doubt Jesus was born and lived, and 51 percent said the Bible records him coming to give his life for many.
  • Yet 49 percent were still uncertain about Jesus's purpose on earth, and that unfamiliarity with why he said he came is discouraging.
  • That statistic fueled this message: it can fuel our ministry and passion to make sure everybody knows why he came.

Many Reasons — One Main Reason: Salvation

  • Scripture gives many reasons: he came to fulfill the law, to proclaim good news (Luke 4), to do the Father's will, to keep, save, and redeem believers.
  • He came for judgment (John 12), and so the world would have light and not remain in darkness; we are not possessed by dark thoughts or a dark future.
  • He came to bear witness to the truth, to serve and give his life, and to call sinners — not the righteous — to repentance.
  • But the main, all-important reason, repeated over and over in scripture, is to bring salvation to all humanity: it is whosoever will.
  • The angel told Joseph to call the child's name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.
  • In John 3 he says God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved (John 3:17).

Scriptures: Luke 4; John 12; John 3; John 3:17

He Came to Put Away Sin

  • He gave his life because he loved us, and because he wanted to forgive, take away, and overcome sin.
  • God has never said 'that's it' — not when Adam and Eve sinned, not after our first sin or our most recent sin; he still says, I love you, and I came to take your sin away.
  • Guilt may keep knocking relentlessly at someone's door, but he came to cancel it: Hebrews 9:26 says he appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself — 'put away' means cancel, pardon, abolish the destruction and power of sin.
  • Paul said in Colossians 2:14 that he blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us — the proven charges against us are wiped out.
  • He was wounded and we were forgiven; bruised and our iniquities removed; chastised and we get peace; beaten and we are healed.
  • This church will not make anyone earn forgiveness in spite of us; we will stand alongside rejoicing with the angels of heaven over sins that are no longer there.

Scriptures: Hebrews 9:26; Colossians 2:14

He Came to Destroy the One Who Had the Power of Death

  • Hebrews 2:14: as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself took part of the same — he became incarnate so that through death he could die.
  • Through that death, and his raising and resurrection, he might destroy the one who had the power of death — that is, the devil.
  • 'Destroy' here means to bring to nothing, to render inoperative: at Calvary Satan was not annihilated, but his power to continually control us to sin was broken.
  • Your sinfulness is not a forever edict over your life; you are not a hopeless case.

Scriptures: Hebrews 2:14

The Thief Steals, Kills, Destroys — Jesus Destroys His Works

  • The thief comes to steal: not robbing a bank, but pilfering little by little — one Wednesday night, one Sunday morning, one part of Bible reading at a time — stealing our values, boundaries, and dedication.
  • He comes to kill: to sacrifice our lives on the altar of useless, eternally meaningless pursuits; and to destroy: to make us inoperable and unsuitable for use.
  • Satan wants you to feel ineffective and unusable, but don't let what the devil or anybody else says about you trump what God says about you.
  • God came in the flesh, Jesus Christ, to destroy the works of the devil (1 John); greater is he that is in us, in the salvation plan and the new birth plan.

Scriptures: 1 John (book-only, as spoken)

I Am Come That They Might Have Life More Abundantly

  • In that same verse, John 10:10, Jesus said he came so we might have life, and have it more abundantly.
  • Scripture uses two words for life: 'bios,' physical life — breath in our lungs — used ten times; and 'zoe,' a vitality, fullness, and quality of life, used 135 times.
  • He came to give a rare vitality: he meant for us to enjoy living for him and enjoy church — going to church is not incarceration.
  • Life more abundantly is life beyond: beyond what the world can give, beyond what the enemy offers, beyond the pleasures of sin — excessive in quantity and in quality.
  • If you're wondering whether the Holy Ghost experience is worth it, it's beyond being worth it.

Scriptures: John 10:10

The Altar Call: Thank Him That He Came

  • The enemy tries to poke holes in our faith — can all sins really be destroyed, does God really forgive that past? The answer stands: either you are already forgiven, or you are about to be; the debts are already canceled or about to be canceled.
  • He opens the altar for anyone to thank him for coming and dying: for sin remission, for the devil's power broken and limited, and for new and abundant life.
  • He himself came to live so that he could die, and live again, so that we could live again; believers are urged to proclaim the praises of him who brought us out of darkness into his marvelous light.
  • He points to Sister Alicia Sadler, baptized in Jesus' name a couple months ago, who came out of the water speaking in other tongues, as a picture of what God has done.
  • The service closes in thanksgiving — thank you, Jesus, that you came — for what he has done for each one, and for what he will do in the future.

first i'll read from luke 19 and 10 and then there will be two other verses of scripture from first timothy chapter one and second corinthians chapter five jesus said in luke 19 and 10 for the son of man is come to seek and to save he gives us his reason for coming to seek and to save that which was lost brother ever would you read first timothy chapter one this is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that christ jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom i am chief and then pastor from second corinthians chapter 5 18-19 and all things are of god with reconciled us to himself by jesus christ given to us the ministry of reconciliation to with that god was in christ reconciling the world unto himself not imputing their trespasses unto them and have committed unto us the word of reconciliation those three among many others tell us that this is why jesus came thank god for reconciliation thank god for the seeking and the saving thank god that he came for those who are sinners all grades of sinners paul said he felt like his was the least grade or the top grade however you want to view it i preached today why jesus came would you pray together now lord we want the results of your coming to be evident in our lives and to be evident in this service to be evident in hearts and lives of folks that are here and those that are viewing online anytime these verses are read you intended that we would understand that you came to reconcile us and give us the wonderful opportunity many of us are enjoying right now but your intention is for many others to enjoy this same reconciliation we thank you for it in jesus name amen and

you may be seated we recently celebrated christmas and we're often reminded we say it others say it that he is the reason for the season jesus christ is not only the reason for christmas but he's the reason for the church he's the reason for this church he's the reason there is ministry he's the reason for this service this morning but then a follow-up question is what's the reason for jesus that question was the focus of a recent research poll conducted by lifeways lifeway ministries and according to their findings many american many of those christians believe that the birth of christ was a real historical event there was no doubt that jesus lived was born and lived better still the majority of those respondents understood why jesus came 51 of those christians responding say that the bible records jesus coming to give his life for many but with that good news about the good news 49 were still uncertain about jesus's purpose here on this earth when i read that statistic it did concern me and it puzzled me despite a widespread belief that jesus came to this earth as a baby and as a man there was far less familiarity with why jesus said that he came and that is somewhat discouraging but on the bright side of that statistic that people may not really know why that could fuel us and fuel our ministry and our passion to do everything we can to make sure everybody knows why he came in fact i will tell you that upon reading that article that is what fueled and bird this message today why did jesus come why do we have services like this one why do we have the church apc and then the church worldwide

now scripture gives many reasons for his coming i won't give the exhaustive list but i'll run through a few of them jesus himself said i have come to fulfill the law another place he said i came to proclaim good news luke 4. another place he said i have come to do the father's will which is to keep and to save and then to redeem believers he said in another place i have come for judgment in john 12 jesus said i have come that the world would have light and that we would not remain in darkness we sung about that a few moments ago aren't you glad we have the light of who he is and the light of his blessing in your life and in your mind and in your thinking you are not possessed by dark thoughts you are not possessed by a dark future or a dark out into the future existence but we have his light he came to bear witness to the truth he came to serve and to give his life and then jesus said those who are well they may not need a physician but those who are sick i came not to call the righteous but here's why i came to call sinners i have come to call sinners to repentance all of those are reasons and there are even more but his main all-important reason for coming if you would ever be asked this question this would be the answer that scripture and that god intends and it's repeated over and over in the scripture that purpose was to bring salvation to you and i and to all of humanity i am so glad that it's whosoever will that means that more than us in the st louis area can be repenting and can have faith and can be baptized and can have the baptism of the holy ghost it's for whosoever will he came to bring salvation the text that we read bore it out seek and save the lost coming into the world to save sinners paul wrote to timothy and then when the angel talked to joseph he said your your wife mary is going to have a son call his name jesus here's why for he shall save his people from their sins and then jesus said in the familiar section of john 3 that he so loved the world but then in 17 for god did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved god wants you and i to be saved if you're viewing online and wondering today he wants you to be saved if you're in this building and wondering is salvation for me have i done too much in my past no he said a while ago come to me i have a future for you he came to give his life why did he give his life he loved us yes because he loved us and then because of that love for us he gives his life because first of all he wanted to forgive and take away and overcome sin what love he had a pure spotless perfect one and yet he sees humanity you and i flailing and faltering and doing wrong and taking his name in vain and marking our lives with sin going against his laws but yet yet in going against exactly what he intended he still loved us now sometimes in our humanity when we get fed up with somebody we say that's it i'm glad the lord hasn't said that's it i'm glad he didn't say that when adam and eve sinned i'm glad he didn't say that after my first sin and i'm glad he didn't say it after my 1000th sin and i'm glad he didn't say that after my most recent sin but he said i love you and the reason i have come is to take away and forgive if you need forgiveness today anybody in here if you need forgiveness if you need your sins taken away if you need your sins overcome that's exactly why he came you're not alone you don't have to do it by yourself the lord came and his blood hebrews 9 26 he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages he saved it for our time and when he appeared the writer said to do what to put away sin by the sacrifice that's why he died that's why he came that's why he died to put away that term put away means cancel to disall to pardon the destruction and the power of sin is put away he has come to abolish the results to give full deliverance from guilt and i know definitely i do not know who this is but i know definitely that i am preaching to somebody that guilt has been hollering outside your window and guilt and and feeling like you cannot be forgiven is standing and keeps knocking at a relentless aggravating knock at your door but he came the reason he came was to take away and to put away and to cancel that paul experienced it and he said in colossians chapter 2 verse 14 took blot out he'd already talked about his death beforehand and here's what happened to blot out the handwriting of ordinance that was against us he blotted out the charges that were proven against you he wiped it out everybody today your sins and your death are canceled he was wounded and we were forgiven he was bruised and our iniquities were removed he was chastised or mistreated and we get the peace he was beaten and we are healed here's his response to our sin to save us from our sin god's not looking the other way god's not saying i don't want him have anything to do with her i don't want to have anything to do with him no sir he is looking straight on at us and at our sin and says you're the one i've come for aren't you glad for that some of you got a got the baptism of the holy ghost in a house full of saints but despite all of us and this isn't a church that is going to be that way or is that way we're for you to be forgiven we're for your debt to be canceled you're not going to get it in spite of us you're going to get that cancellation and we're going to be right alongside rejoicing with the angels of heaven saying hey that that's not there anymore that line of sins are not there anymore i can't see it anymore they're forgiven they're changed they're renewed came to remove our sin hebrews chapter 2 and verse 14. since we as the children of god are partakers of flesh and blood he also himself took part of the same he came that through death came and died he might destroy him or destroy the one that had the power of death and then he leaves no doubt about who he's talking about that is the devil the reason the lord jesus became incarnate is so he might die he lived so he could die and the reason he needed to die is because through that death and that eventual raising and resurrection the power of death was broken and the power of the one who has the power of death is broken the word destroy in that verse that he might destroy literally means to bring to nothing to render in operative now think with me a minute at calvary satan was not annihilated but his power was broken does he still have power yes he does but power to continually control us to sin you are not a hopeless case your sinfulness is not a forever edict over your life jesus came and jesus died and he's the only one that could do what he did to break the power of satan that death hold that he had on us he cannot hear me i'm i may not be so much preaching to you or the internet right now but i will preach to the devil if he is here you do not have the power i feel a covering of the holy ghost i've asked a lot of folks to pray for me over this message you can't talk this kind of stuff if you're not covered but i speak it in the authority of the name of jesus because somebody needs to the thief he's talking about the devil talking about the devil cometh not but far too in other words here's what he is all about here's his works that john writes about later that jesus came to destroy to steal kill to destroy to steal this word here doesn't mean going out and robbing a bank this word here means to pilfer little by little take things of small value in a casual way such as then the person doesn't notice now she'd never do this but i lay my money on the dresser up there and it would be easy for becky to pilfer i did not say becky pilfers but i'm using her as the sacrificial lamb for this message i do not count it every time i put it back into my pocket in fact folks this is the most cash i've carried in my pocket and i didn't know i was even going to be using this illustration i've got 60 bucks hallelujah i didn't realize i had that much in there where are you taking me to eat today babe little by little it's kind of like identity theft it's kind of like that that fishing and those those hacking just take a little bit at a time you know just one wednesday night just one sunday morning just one fast meal just just one part of my bible reading just just you know not all that much wrong with that program just a little bit just a little bit the enemy comes to steal steal our values steal our boundaries steal our dedication points steal our values jesus came to destroy all of that and then to kill the term literally means a killing not like somebody getting mugged in an alley but this was the killing as they would kill the sacrifice for the to lay upon an altar of some sort both false worship and true worship the enemy wants to offer up your life and mine on the sacrifice and on the altar of useless eternally meaningless pursuits and purposes he came to sacrifice you on that altar of things that will not matter ultimately in eternity to steal to kill to destroy and that word means to make inoperable or make unsuitable for use but i serve the enemy notice and i serve the notice to anybody that satan has been working on in that way jesus came he said to destroy those things right there satan wants you to feel like you are ineffective hear me everybody listen close satan wants you to feel like you are unsuitable for use satan wants you to feel like that you are inoperable he came to steal kill and to destroy but there's a greater destroyer than satan god came according to

first john so in the flesh jesus christ to destroy and to stop all of that you are not hopeless your life and the giftings and the talents can operate in this world in your family and in the kingdom of god you need not be inoperable you are not unsuitable for use listen don't let what somebody else says about you the devil or anybody else don't let what they think or say about you trump what god says about you he said you're forgiven he said i come to destroy the works of the devil and satan i know he's working overtime but greater is he that is in us greater is he that is in this salvation plan greater is he that is in the new birth plan and in that same verse john 10 10 jesus said here's why i've come i've come that they might have life whew i could sing i'd sing that song a while ago we were that we were seeing a while ago glorious day you know what i got blessed by the message of that song but i got i think a little more blessed watching people enjoy singing that song you could tell they had a glorious day and i'm not talking about just today but i'm talking about their experience in god out of darkness in the marvelous light we're free to give him the hallelujahs that we want to give him and that he deserves i've come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly there are two words in scripture that are used for life one of them means literal life it's the word bios it's mentioned 10 times in the scripture it means breath in our lungs it means life as we know it blood pumping and air flowing physical life use ten times the word that's used here jesus said i've come to give them life is z-o-e and it means a vitality or a fullness or a quality of life that one's used 135 times over 13 more times god i believe on purpose says i want you to have more than just physical life and i'm glad he gives that to us and it does come from him but several more times he talks about having a quality of life he came to give us a rare vitality he meant for us to enjoy living for him whoa hallelujah i'm gonna try that a couple more times he meant for us he meant for us to sing that song like y'all were singing it a while ago he meant for us to enjoy church enjoy the spirit of god so much that if we feel like running we get to run if we feel like crying we get to cry nobody's making me do this uh i've got a rare vitality i've got a rare opportunity get this going to church is not incarceration he meant for us to enjoy him no wonder you got a smile on your face do we have problems yes do we have circumstances yes but do we have a joy that rides above all of that you go ahead he said come unto me oh either weary and heavy laden cast all your care come on in here with your cares but god's going to give you strength enough to lift your hands from the underneath those weight of care and say i love you jesus i've got a life that is rare you came to give more abundantly he said it's just not life it's life more abundantly the literal root of that word means beyond i came to give you a life beyond well if that means heaven that that works but he was talking about this life right here a life beyond beyond what the world can give you beyond what the enemy can offer beyond what sin somebody that's been tempted then the enemy's been knocking on your door and it does look so good and there are pleasures of sin according to scripture that's a biblical phrase there are pleasures of sin but there is something that is beyond that he said i come to give you life more abundantly life beyond in quantity and in quality excessive if you're wondering about this holy ghost experience if you're wondering is it going to be worth it i'm going to tell you it's beyond being worth it you ought to just lift your hands today thank god for his blessings and when you lift your hands and start praising him you're going to start speaking in other tongues as the spirit of god gives the utterance keep praising him keep praising him while you stand

stand with me but just keep praising him right now oh yes oh yes oh yes yes someone that had been in prayer about this message i want to share this with you they came to me and they said pastor they said as i was praying for you i sensed that the enemy was grant going to try to poke holes in the faith of people concerning the message and the message points and god's ideas and his purposes and then enemy can do that he will work on us and our own thinking can do that also try to poke holes in well will everything be destroyed can all of my sins does god have the power over everything does god really forgive that past does he really cancel i want to say this again i want to say it again you either are already forgiven and i know we all remember our wrongs of the past but we can worship beyond those because he's forgiven us and we can walk with a self-confidence a spiritual healthy self-esteem and confidence either you are already forgiven and those debts are already canceled are they're fixing to be canceled hallelujah would somebody agree to that right now for people that they are getting ready they are getting ready to be forgiven they are getting ready to be canceled they are getting ready to be washed away i want everybody that's got a voice and you have faith i want you to lift your hands and lift your voice don't just use your hands but use your voice right now and give him thanks or appropriate faith appropriate faith yes i believe you lord i believe you jesus son i believe you jesus i believe you jesus i believe you jesus i thank you ah thank him for yourself and then thank him that it's going to take care of somebody else's sin help them to believe it now lord yes
