Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The introduction, and the reading from Acts 11

  • The host presents the first speaker of the night: his neighboring pastor, who came to the city of Raleigh, North Carolina just a few years ago and has built one of the greatest churches in the district in just a few short years — "brother Wayne Huntley from Raleigh North Carolina." Huntley's first words pick up the welcome: he does not expect to carry them across the goal line tonight; his position in this meeting is to knock a hole in the defense and make a way so that the men who come behind him will find easy running and score for Jesus Christ at this conference.
  • He gives honor to the host pastor, brother and sister Gerald Mangan, and brother and sister Anthony Mangan (name forms as captioned — see packet.md), and to the host of ministers assembled; the general superintendent will be following him, and that gives him great pressure, but he will just try to knock a hole and clear a little way so the superintendent can have clear sailing. He is very happy to be here — he and his wife Christie count it a privilege to be a part of this great meeting. On the way over, his convoy of about five carloads from North Carolina found forerunners at every stop: folks began to ask, "Are you going to the conference?" — from the center of the US to the east coast the word is spreading that there's a Holy Ghost conference being held in Alexandria, Louisiana; in a restaurant a waitress agreed to a favor only if he would tell her what kind of Pentecostal church he pastors.
  • "I want you to know this is the greatest grandest hour God's true church has ever had to impact the world with the Holy Ghost message." He takes them to Acts 11 and reads: verse 1 — "and the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God"; and verse 2 — "and when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised and didst eat with them." But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning and expounded it by order: "I was in the city of Joppa praying" (settled form — see packet.md). Huntley underlines Peter's own introduction: say what you want to know about what happened — "it all started while I was praying... a Holy Ghost prayer meeting changes the attitude a little when you put the foundation like that." In the trance Peter saw a certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners (settled form — see packet.md) — "and it came even to me" — and on it four-footed beasts of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, fowls of the air: "you know and I know he's talking about the Gentile church." And the voice: "Arise, Peter, slay and eat." "Not so, Lord, for nothing common or unclean have at any time entered into my mouth." "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common."

"We must never lose the miracle of it all"

  • There, across the reading's close, he announces the subject: "I want to preach: just because of the time, we must never lose the miracle of it all — that's right, the miracle of it all." Turn around and tell somebody it's all right to go ahead and get excited.
  • He frames the setting: Acts chapter 10 is the story that's being related in Acts chapter 11, and Acts 11 is one of the most notable chapters in the entirety of God's word — the crescendo note of Calvary's impact, the opening of a brand new dimension to mankind in relationship with Jesus Christ his Lord. It is now nine years later — approximately 42 AD — after the first outpouring that came out of the upper room on the day of Pentecost, when those who were there were thought to be drunk and began to speak in that heavenly language as the Spirit of God gave them utterance (settled form — see packet.md); the anointing dropped on Simon Peter, and he began to preach the Acts answer — repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, for the promise is unto you and to your children and to them that are far off (the wording is reported here as content; see packet.md). Nine years later Simon Peter still has the keys to the kingdom in his hands, but the text finds him refusing to open the door — on the brink of a brand new dimension of apostolic revival, with the keys in his hands, arguing with God.
  • His firm conviction tonight: this New Testament church needs nothing new to have apostolic revival. All Peter had to do to break the revival open was to practice what he had already preached. "We're not going to hear a new message, ladies and gentlemen — there isn't a new message. We have not come to Alexandria looking for spiritual quick formulas; we have not come looking for some new technique. What we've come looking for is an inspiration, a motivation, a stimulation, a touch of fire from the Holy Ghost — and we're going to get it, cuz it's here tonight."
  • He retells Peter's resistance: ushering in the Gentile dispensation, Peter backs up with his holy religious card and begins to remind God of his righteousness — "Not so, Lord, nothing unclean or common has ever entered into my mouth" — and probably felt he would make a few points with Jehovah Jesus; instead the unseen hand of the Spirit seemed to give him a very firm, stern rebuke — seemed to slap his face (settled form — see packet.md) — and the heavens seemed to boom with the voice of deity: "Let me tell you something: what I have cleansed, don't you call it common." Peter had missed the will of God on many occasions, before he got the Holy Ghost and after; what God was trying to get him to understand is this: this is nothing normal, not another day at the office, not business as normal — "we're about to view a miraculous work of the supernatural spirit of God. It's not normal — it's a miracle. And don't let it become common to you."

Scriptures: Acts 10

What it took to make this moment

  • God got upset at him: "Don't you call it common or unclean, that which I have cleansed — because, Simon son, you don't understand what all it took to make this moment possible." It took a 4,000-year-old plan that was fulfilled on Calvary's hill; it took a ripping down of the wall of partition (settled form — see packet.md) that had stood for a long time; it took a Holy Ghost conception, a virgin birth, an immaculate life; it took the common of stormy seas (as captioned — see packet.md), the diverting and the dodging of the devil's snares, the Gethsemane of surrender, a Calvary of crucifixion, an empty tomb outside of Jerusalem, a resurrection, a holy Ascension, an access and approach into the throne room of God — not with blood, but with precious blood that was sprinkled on the altar of God (settled form — see packet.md); it took a return in the power of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost; it took a man named Cornelius to pray until his prayers became a monument and a memorial, and God sent down an angel and said, in effect: the preacher's over here and the candidates over there — I'm going to bring you together. "God said, Simon, don't you ever let this become common."
  • So it is with us: "We Pentecostals must not let this become common to us. It must never become common; it must always be a miracle." There is nothing common about us, and nothing common about our message: it's a miraculous message — not a Band-Aid relief, but a brand new creature in Christ Jesus; it'll cause you to throw the cigarettes down, take the drugs out of your hands, take lust out of your heart, take the world out of your heart. We've got a miraculous God — he can do anything, at any time, for anybody, whenever he gets ready. We've got a miraculous revelation: flesh and blood have not revealed it — that's common, that's normal — but my Father has; the fact that we know Jesus is not the second person of a fictitious godhead but the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace (settled form — see packet.md) is miraculous. It must not become common, it must not become normal; it must always cause chill bumps to come up on us (settled form — see packet.md); it ought to always cause us to get excited. "I feel the Holy Ghost is calling the preachers back to regrouping and regaining the miracle of it all."

Salvation is a miracle

  • "Salvation is a miracle. Salvation is not common — it's a miracle." Many can preach, pray, and teach, but only One can save, heal, and make a man to see and to understand (the captioned parallel is garbled; see packet.md). And while he's on the subject: "Let me tell you the greatest miracle on planet Earth is when a man repents and it's baptized in Jesus name and it's filled with the Holy Ghost. A person can get healed and die and go to hell — but if you experience the miracle of salvation, it's eternal. It's eternal."
  • What the Holy Ghost is wanting us to do tonight is this: come out of the doldrums, come out of the business-as-usual attitude — just another Wednesday night Bible study, just another point on the calendar, just another obligation to fulfill. "It's a miracle, it's a miracle, it's a miracle. It's not just Bible study — it's a miracle. It's not just prayer meeting — it's a miracle." God heals and delivers. "Salvation is a miracle. Salvation is a miracle. Don't ever lose the miracle of it all."

Matthew 13: direction and illumination

  • "In Matthew chapter 13 several parables are given," and he works through them to establish points that are very rare and uncommon — miraculous. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure that is hid in a field; salvation is the result of a miraculous DIRECTION. A lot of folks are amazed at Noah building the ark — carried away with the instruction, amazed at his faith — but the thing he has always pondered is not the completion of the ark but how Noah ever got its residents into it (settled form — see packet.md): a he and a her monkey watching somewhere in the trees (settled form — see packet.md), a gorilla somewhere, a baboon somewhere, a zebra somewhere, a giraffe somewhere, and suddenly something said "put your foot down this way... now take a 90°" — and before they knew what was happening they were going up a gangplank into the only ark. And when brother Noah let the gangplank down, his message was not "attend the ark of your choice": you either rode Noah's boat or you didn't go (settled form — see packet.md); God brought the folks there that needed to ride. The church is a miracle — but how I ever got to it is a miracle: led of the Holy Ghost (first word settled — see packet.md). There are all kinds of churches in town — three Gods, four Gods, no God — but here we are tonight.
  • Miraculous ILLUMINATION: the man who came by the field, found the treasure, hid it, and for joy thereof went and sold all that he had and bought that field. A lot of folks would have passed by that field and by that pearl and gone right on their way — "we have a lot of folks to do that in Raleigh: they come by the field, they look at the pearl, and they get up walk on out" — but when we came by where the field was and saw the pearl, we said, "This is worth everything we've got." The only folks who have problems with the message of separation from the world and the standards of holiness are those in one of two categories: they've never seen the miracle, or they've lost the miracle. When you see what God did for you when he brought you out of that world of sin, nothing's too hard, nothing's too straight, nothing's too rigid.
