Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

Matthew 13: visitation and preservation

  • Miraculous VISITATION: then the Bible said it's like a net that was cast into the sea and gathered of every kind it came in contact with. When that net was thrown into the deep (settled form — see packet.md), some things out there were swimming alone, minding their own business, and all at once something came down on them and began to draw them — and without even knowing what was happening they started heading toward the shore, toward the bank, toward a prayer meeting (settled form — see packet.md), toward a church, toward God. "Do you remember when you were sailing around in the sea of sin and all of a sudden the old gospel net dropped down on you, and some preacher somewhere started pulling the rope and began to tug you in and draw you out of sin into the church? Something got a hold of me."
  • Miraculous PRESERVATION: but when they got to the shore the miracle wasn't over, because he began to separate and weed out, and a bunch got thrown back — "reject, reject, wrong stuff for this bunch, can't cut it here, reject" — and Huntley puts himself in the picture: "I was laying over there flopping, saying, God, I hope I got what it takes, cuz I don't want to go back — I want to stay on the shore." It was a miraculous visitation that brought us in, but it's a miraculous preservation that has kept us in: there's been temptations but we're still here; trials but we're still here; tests but we're still here; we fought the devil but we're still here; we fought the flesh but we're still here — by the miraculous power of God. "Don't lose the miracle of it all. The fact that you're here tonight — you're still walking in a miracle. Folks are looking all over the world saying, I want to see a miracle: if you still got the Holy Ghost and you're still living holy, you're living in a miracle."

Matthew 18: the miracle of forgiveness

  • "Matthew chapter 18 tells an unusual story — it's one I could not understand for some time." It tells about a man that was in debt — I mean he was in debt: if he gave his whole check for the rest of his life he'd have never paid out. He's like a lot of folks, always hoping that when the bill collector came he wouldn't be home, because his wife couldn't handle that debt (settled form — see packet.md). But the king said, "It's reckoning time, son — I'm calling you in about this debt that you owe." "Oh yes sir, yes sir — I knew I owed you a little something there, sir; I realized I was a little short; I ain't being getting the hours I need lately, kind of been cut back, you understand." But this debt is $20 million — from what he has read in comparison of our monetary values, equal to $20 million: "pretty good debt." So the king said: take him, sell him, sell his wife and his children, his land, everything he's got, and we're going to hold him in jail. And the Bible said this man flung himself at the king's feet and said, "Sir, have compassion on me, have patience — I will pay thee all." And the Bible said his Lord, his King, looked at him and said: "I forgive" (the captioned form garbles the king's word; settled — see packet.md).
  • "Now here's what I don't understand": the fellow (settled form — see packet.md) left the presence of the king, and as he walked down the street he saw a guy, and it registered on him that that rascal owes him some money. "You mind if I rough you up a little bit? You seem to have a good spirit, and you're not too big." The Bible said he grabbed him by the throat and began to squeeze the life out of him: "I'm not going to let you go until you pay me what you owe me." And what that fellow owed him was an equivalent of $20. Twenty dollars.
  • Here's the way he sees the story: when the king had forgiven him, he should have left that place running down the streets shouting "forgiven" — stopping strangers: "Sir, I know you don't even know my name, sir, but let me tell you: the king said forgiven. I just come from somewhere, and I owe a debt no way I could pay it, but he said forgiven. I love you, I like you — what a day this is, what a day this is."
  • "Now may I remind you tonight — or has it been too long since the king said about that debt you owe? I was hopeless, I was helpless, I couldn't pay out, no way off, doomed — and he said, I forgive. And we must never, never lose the miracle of forgiveness." He's preaching tonight to some folks who have been in the church so long they have forgotten what a debt they owed — and that's why sometimes we get a little grouchy with God, a little demanding with God: "If you don't do this I quit; if you don't meet this I'm giving up; if you don't do this for me I'm throwing the towel in." We forget we were hopeless, we were helpless — he forgave us.

Scriptures: Matthew 18

Delivered from false doctrine

  • "Some of you said: but brother Huntley (settled form — see packet.md), I wasn't a drink (as captioned — see packet.md). Not everybody in Pentecost was a drunk" — and he turns to those who came out of false doctrine, out of the deception of the religious world. "Now you listen: if what I read in my Bible is right, you that came out of a religious world of false doctrine ought to be more excited, and more thrilled, and more in love with the Lord" than those delivered from drink — "here's why: because he said, I have not come to call the righteous — how did you even get here without him calling you? — when he came to seek and to save the lost; but the self-righteous, somehow or another, he said, I'll let you come too, if you'll just realize it's a miracle." Hey: it's a miracle to be delivered from a trinity theory; it's a miracle to be delivered from religious confusion. "You think we shout too much? Not on your life. You think we're too excited? Not on your life. We're walking in a miracle, we're living in a miracle, we're experiencing a miracle."

The John Doe drama, and the close

  • "Here we are — a little drama, please, if you will." Sunday night, John Doe comes in: he repents, he gets the Holy Ghost, he's baptized in the name of the Lord. Wednesday night Bible study — not Because of the Times, not camp meeting, just Bible study — here he comes. He doesn't park in the back: "Oh, he's respectful: 'Excuse me, sir. Pardon me, sir. I love you, brother — ain't Jesus good? How you, sister? Would it offend you if I sit right there? Are you sure? I don't want offend anybody — not any of God's precious little children. I wouldn't hurt you for the world. Is it all right now? If it's going to offend you, I'll go back yonder (settled form — see packet.md). I mean, if you think I might use a little bit too much of your oxygen in here, I'll go back over yonder (settled form — see packet.md).'" Because you see, this old boy don't care where he sits: he is just glad to be here — glad to be out of the devil's dens, glad to be out of the honky-tonks, glad to be out of booze, glad to be out of alcohol, glad to be in the house of God. "So — can I have your seat for a few minutes, church?"
  • As the drama runs on, the pastor preaches: "Jesus is God. Did you hear me? Jesus is God, Jesus is God, Jesus is God" — and "then Peter said unto them, Repent... be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus" — and the new convert receives it like the greatest preaching ever heard: "Have you ever heard that before? Is that the greatest preacher, or is that the greatest preacher?" (The Peter wording inside the drama is reported as content; see packet.md.) But here's the sad state of affairs up to this point: up to this point, you could almost always tell who had been in the church the longest. "You say, is it a spirit of discernment? No — it's two eyes. Then how do you know? They're the saddest" (the captioned superlative paired with it is garbled; see packet.md).
  • The close: "But I'm telling you, something's changing. The Holy Ghost is sending a revival, and it's going to be hard to tell the new convert (settled form — see packet.md) from the season sake (as captioned — see packet.md); it's going to be hard to tell who's who — woo! — because we're going to catch the spirit of the miracle of it all. It's a miracle, it's a miracle, it's a miracle..." There the caption track ends — mid-refrain, a few seconds before the video does (see packet.md).
