Summary
Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
The burden, and the two readings
- The capture opens on Huntley himself, thanking brother Mangan (caption form; see packet.md) and feeling the waves of the Holy Ghost resounding over the auditorium: you cannot handle but so much of the Word of God without an explosion, and the effectiveness of a message is often not seen immediately — it comes back like the cracking of a wheel. His stated concern is revival and church growth, his heartbeat: it is the will of God for every United Pentecostal church to be the largest church in its town — "I don't say that because we are, but I still believe it's the will of God, and I want it to be, and I'm working for it to be." What he wants is "a persistent, continual, prevailing move of the Spirit."
- He takes them first to John chapter 11, verses 42 through 45, and reads the close of Jesus' prayer at Lazarus's tomb: "And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people would stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou has sent me" — and then the cry, "Lazarus, come forth," and the dead man coming forth "bound hand and foot with grave clothes" (captioned "great clothes"; see packet.md), his face bound about with a napkin, and Jesus' word to the bystanders: "Loose him, and let him go." Messages like the ones he has just heard in this conference, he says, thrust him before the Lord in prayer when he was a student at Texas Bible College and revolutionized his life; he is a debtor to brother Kilgore and to all these great men of God.
- The second reading is Galatians chapter 4 and verse 19: "My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you" — and on it he announces his subject: "I want to preach on the second dimension of spiritual deliverance." They pray for the anointing, shout revival, tell their neighbors "I believe it," and are seated.
Scriptures: John 11:42-45; Galatians 4:19
Jesus is the resurrection: the degree of death is immaterial
- There are three documented accounts in the physical life of the Lord of his visiting the dark domain of death. The daughter of Jairus had just died — long enough only for the mourners to gather; he put them out of the room: this is not about to be a funeral, it is about to be a resurrection. The son of the widow of Nain (captioned "Maine"; see packet.md) had been dead long enough to be put in a casket and headed toward the cemetery; Jesus interrupted the funeral program and presented the boy back to his mother. And Lazarus had been dead four days. In each case Jesus' word stands: "I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live" (the wording is quoted here without a citation being spoken; see packet.md).
- The implication, he says, is that the degree of death is absolutely immaterial: whether one has been dead long enough for the mourners to gather, or long enough to be headed to a cemetery, or dead four days — it has nothing to do with it. "Jesus is the resurrection, and he is the life." Our world is not too wicked to have revival and not too sinful to be converted; there is no such thing as anybody being beyond the point of reconciliation or salvation; he is able to save to the uttermost. If there is breath in their body, they are a candidate for this glorious message: "We don't need to give the devil anybody. We don't need to surrender anybody to sin. We don't need to surrender anybody to hell." We may feel the flames and get touched by the heat, but we can walk through the fire and pull them out.
The first dimension: Acts 2:38 — and stopping short
- One of the great joys of his pastoring in Raleigh has been to walk to the very doors of the grave and jerk some loose from the fingers of death — you could almost hear the fingers of death snapping as the power of the gospel broke them free. He is not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, not ashamed of the Acts 2:38 message, not ashamed to preach repentance; if anybody ought to be ashamed, it is those who preach easy believism or easy confessionism. The real gospel is the death, the burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ: in repentance we empty out sin; in the lovely name of Jesus it is taken away; then comes the infilling of the Holy Ghost to empower us to keep out what was emptied out. Full Bible salvation is repenting of sin, remission of sin, and then the infilling of the power of the Holy Ghost. "It works. This gospel works." Acts 2:38, he says, is the first dimension of deliverance (the verse is named throughout this sermon as the label of the salvation message, never read or expounded as a text; it does not ship as a reference — see packet.md).
- But the church is too quick to get up from the altar and count how many prayed through, to score them up on the board for a good count at a restaurant after service: "I'm tired of cotton candy type statistics around the church" — a whole lot of hullabaloo and shouting and rejoicing with no real addition to the kingdom of God. "Let's shout the hair down, but when we put the pins back in, let's have something to show for it." After Pentecost they counted — and God wants the church to grow. Too often we are excited about the first dimension, rub our hands together when they are baptized and receive the Spirit, and usher them back to the pew as though our job were completed. But Paul said, "I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you" (the Galatians reading of the first section). "I want to maintain what God brings through my doors." Our weakness has been that we stopped short on the first dimension when there is really a second dimension of deliverance: God wants everybody not only to be free, but free in full.
The formula: revival plus evangelism plus maturity
- The theme that has motivated him of late: "Revival plus evangelism plus maturity equals church growth." We cannot expect church growth on any one of those areas alone. We are too prone to look for a fast fix, a quick cure, some kind of pill we can pop — but Paul said he would keep on travailing, just as he cried when they came to the altar the night God gave them the Spirit, until Christ is formed in them. That is the second dimension of deliverance.
- The first dimension is pictured in the reading: Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave — "Lazarus, come forth" — and out of that region nobody is supposed to come back from, one came back. "Do you realize we're in a church today that we've come out of a world where nobody is supposed to get out of it?" Yet here we are in Alexandria, Louisiana, set free by the power of Jesus Christ. At this point he has a man brought up front to stand as Lazarus through the rest of the sermon — "He may not be dead, but he still needs help" — and warns: "folks it ain't over when they talk in tones here it ain't over after they did baptized in jesus name" That is what the enemy of our soul would like us to do — just get excited about the first dimension.
The second dimension: "Loose him, and let him go"
- Jesus resurrected Lazarus — no doubt about that, no help involved; he did it by himself. But when Lazarus came out, Jesus seemed to wipe his hands and step back and say, "Alright, I've done my part" — and he turned to those that were there, his friends, Lazarus's very best friends that cared the most about him, and said, in effect: "Now, I resurrected him — you loose him." As we enter into the final decade, he wants the record straight in the minds of young preachers: holiness preaching is not an adversary thing; it is your friends that unwrap you and unbind you. "Lazarus was alive but not loosed (captioned "Lucien"; see packet.md). He had life, but it had no liberty, because he was wrapped in grave clothes, until Jesus turned around and said, 'Now I've resurrected him — you loose him.'"
- When we preach a message of holiness, separation from the world, "we're not finding — we're loosening. We're not binding — we're loosing." The United Pentecostal Church is not a sad-sack religion: holiness does not make a sad saint; it gives a joy and a peace. "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free" (quoted without a citation being spoken; see packet.md).
Beyond Acts 2:38: the epistles save the saint
- He has the illustrated Lazarus stand the whole sermon as a visible, objective view of what a new convert looks like: even though they have repented, been baptized, and received the Holy Ghost, they are still wrapped up in grave clothes. Peter preached Acts 2:38 — but that is not the end of the message. He tells how a little boy in his church quoted it — "repent be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the permission of sins" — and he corrects it: it is not for the permission of sin, it is for the remission of sins. But it is not the end of the message, and that is where the devil would like us to stop preaching. Peter didn't quit preaching at Acts 2:38: "And with many other words did he exhort and testify" (quoted without a citation being spoken; see packet.md). A lot of those words, he believes, are in the first and second epistles of Peter. "If you're a sinner, the way to get saved is Acts 2:38; but if you're a Christian, the way to get saved is obey the epistles. Just like it takes 238 of Acts to save a sinner, it takes the epistles to save a saint."
- We count how many got saved in a service, but there is no way to calculate how many got saved when a man preached on a Wednesday night to a mind confused and a path of desolation — "Brother Williams, I've come to church... and I got saved when that man preached." People are going to get saved during Because of the Times; people are going to get saved because somebody preached to them.

in Jesus name and Jesus name somebody shout revival around your neighbors say I believe it the Lord bless you and you may be seated there were three documented accounts in the fiscal life of our Lord that he visited the dark domain of death the first one was the resurrection of the Daughter of Jairus the second time being the son of the widow of nain and the third time is the most notable and most frequently referred to the subject of our text today and that is the resurrection of Lazarus I believe there is a message of vital importance to this church in this hour from the frequenting of Jesus to death's domain and that is simply this the Daughter of Jairus had just died long enough for the mourners together he rebuked him and rammed him out of the room and said this is out of place we're not about to have a funeral this is about to be a resurrection the second one was the son of the widow of Nain who had been dead long enough to be wrapped in a in puttin a beer or casket and headed toward the cemetery jesus dissin all the financial plan of the funeral home that day by interrupting their program and presenting the boy back to his mother and set the funeral director home frustrated he'd been dead long enough to be put in a casket and headed to a cemetery the third one was Lazarus who'd been dead for four days and Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life he that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live the connotation and the implication of these incidents clearly speaks to us that Jesus would have us to know the degree of death is absolutely in material Jesus Christ is still the resurrection whether one has just been dead long enough for the mourners together or whether they've been dead long enough to be put in a casket and headed to a funeral celebration or whether they have actually been dead for four days jesus said that absolutely has nothing to do with it I am the resurrection I think we ought to leave this conference aware that Jesus is the resurrection and he is the life our world is not too wicked to have revival our world is not too sinful to be converted there is no such thing as anybody being beyond the point of reconciliation or the point of salvation he is able to save to the uttermost hallelujah and if there's breath in their body they are a candidate for this glorious message and we don't need to give the devil anybody we don't need to surrender anybody to sin we don't need to surrender anybody to hell we may feel the flames and get touched by the heat but we can walk through the fire and pull them out and let's give ear for Jesus Christ one of the great joys I've had in pastoring in Raleigh has been to walk to the very doors of the grave and jerk some loose from the fingers of death you could almost feel and hear the fingers of death snapping as the power of this gospel that you and I preached broke them free unto spiritual deliverance and salvation I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation hallelujah I'm not ashamed of the acts 2:38 message I'm not ashamed to preach repentance as a matter of fact if anybody ought to be ashamed it's those who would preach easy believe ISM or easy confession ISM I'm telling you the real gospel is the death the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ in repentance we empty out sin this gospel is logical and powerful in repentance we have get out in one of that ISM in the lovely name of Jesus it's taken away and then comes the infilling of the Holy Ghost to empower us to keep out what was emptied out and what was taken away that's why we stand firmly relaxed 2:38 that full Bible salvation is repenting of sin remitting of sin and then the infilling of the power of the Holy Ghost into your life I am more firmly convinced right now about the power of
this gospel than I have ever been in my life it works this gospel works there is no doubt about it that acts 2:38 is the first dimension of deliverance it is the first dimension of deliverance however many times we want to quickly get up from the altar and count how many prayed through so we can score them up on the board so that we can have a good count at some restauraunt after service relative to how many got the Holy Ghost or how many was baptized I'm tired of cotton candy type statistics around the church I'm interested more than a bunch of hullabaloo and a whole lot of throwing in a whole lot of shouting and a whole lot of rejoicing and know real addition to the kingdom of God let's shout the hair down but when we put the pins back in let's have something to show for it after the day of Pentecost where they got trust on the Holy Ghost they started counting two thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine 3019 3000 3000 120 God wants the church to grow and too often we are excited about the first dimension when they get baptized when they get the spirit and we rub our hands together but usher tells him relax back on the Pew like our job has been completed but Paul said I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you I want to maintain what God brings through my doors I'm interested in additional numbers after the revival is over I'm interested in two additional spiritual freak to add to the missionary giving add to the strength of the witness of the church and I think our weakness has been that we have stopped short on the first dimension when there's really a second dimension of deliverance that God wants everybody not only to be free but to be free in peace have a ban on our church it seems to be the theme that I've been motivated of late from it's this revival plus evangelism plus maturity equals church growth revival plus evangelist plus maturity equals church growth we cannot expect to see church growth on one of those areas we are too prone to look for a fast fix a fast fix a quick cure some kind of pill we can pop and it's all over but Paul said I'm going to travail in birth again until I'm going to keep on surveilling just like I cried when you came to the altar the night God gave you the spirit he said I want to keep on crying until Christ is now harm in you that's the second dimension of deliverance the first dimension Jesus call azeris out of the grave he called Lazarus out he said Lazarus come forth Lazarus come forth when that voice entered into that dark domain of silence I don't know what kind of condominium on the other side Lazarus was in I don't know if he had any buddies beside him or not but while everybody else was sleeping lashes with the quivering class was what the shaking and trembling and all of a sudden from a region that you're not supposed to come back from one came back hey do you realize we're in a church today that we've come out of a world where nobody is supposed to get out of it nobody's supposed to be delivered from it but here we are in Alexandria Louisiana set free by the power of Jesus Christ bring him up here buddy he's gonna bring mass was up here I invited lands for searchers today let him stand right there just a minute thank you bill if you stay close to you
a good man help him help him I mean he may not be dead but he still needs help folks it ain't over when they talk in tones here it over after they did baptized in Jesus name and that's what the enemy of our soul would like for us to do just get excited about the first dimension but we're getting a hold of something here that says there's a second dimension into that second dimension hallelujah Jesus resurrected Lazarus no doubt about that no help involved he did by himself he said Lazarus come forth and there he was but when Lazarus came out Jesus seemed to wipe his hands Jesus seemed to step back and say alright I've done my part I've done my part and the Bible said he turned to those that were there hey I got a feeling it was his friends I don't believe this adversaries would have come to say goodbye it's hard to get folks to go to a funeral and I think the ones who were there we're probably his very best friends that cared the most about and Jesus turned to his friends and said now resurrected him you lose as we enter into the final decade I want to get the record straight in the minds of our young preachers the holiness preaching is not an adversary thing it's not a main theme it's your friends that unwrap you and Undine you and on you soon it's your friend it's your plan Lazarus was alive but not loosed he was found but he was found he had life but it had no liberty because he was wrapped in grave clothes until Jesus turned around and said now I've resurrected him you loose him I'm telling you that when we preach a message of holiness separation from the world we're not binding we're loosening we're not finding we're losing well hallelujah and let me say this to you right now passing the United Pentecostal Church is not a sad-sack religion holiness does not make a sad holiness does not make a sad but it gives a joy at peace and you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free the truth set free it's the truth that set free just see on the day of Pentecost Peter preached that do you mind standing the whole sermon you can sit down I won't let him fall I'll call you hey it's good to have folks nearby that can help somebody I want you to look at this time because I believe that's just that is a visible objective view of what a new convert looks like even though they've repented even though they've been baptized and even though they've got the Holy Ghost they're still wrapped up in grave clothes peter briggs action 2:38 but that's not the end of a message now when we set the record straight here too it's not like one little boy in our church quoted acts 2:38 he put it like this then Peter said unto them repent be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the permission of sins acts 2:38 is not for the permission of sin it's for the remission of C but folks not 1 the end of the message and that's where the
devil like Russian stop breaks in I said the devil like for us to stop preaching and acts 2:38 but Peter didn't quit preaching in acts 2:38 and with many other words did he exhort and testify sand the second dimension the second dimension acts 2:38 don't bother some folks but letting them other words do the Bible said with many other wires I'm telling he was nearly through the preaching and a lot of those words I believe are in the first and second epistle of Peter now if you're a sinner the way to get saved as acts 2:38 but if you're a Christian the way to get saved is obey the epistles just like it takes 238 of Acts to save a sinner it takes the epistles to save a saint for God had chosen through the foolishness of preaching per se a then there hey so long to see we count how many got saved in a service but in no way we can calculate how many God's Asian brother Williams I've come to church when my mind was so confused and the adversary was too hot on the trail I was on a path of desolation and destruction but a man got to poop it on a Wednesday night and began to preach and when the county say folks didn't tell me but I got staged I got saved when that man preach I got excellent of you go get safe during because of the times there's folks gonna get saved how's about the wrong way and somebody preach to me they say me we are in an
