Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.
Removing the grave clothes: the work of the ministry
- The hard drive of what he wants to say: you don't have to be a radical fanatic to believe in holiness and separation from the world, and it is not anti-revival — the message of separation from the world is synonymous with revival, because it is the second dimension of spiritual deliverance. Folks are not really saved just because they talked in tongues and got baptized — if they live another day, they're going to need to walk in the epistles; they're going to need a Bible study; they're going to need a preacher; they're going to need somebody to preach the Word of God.
- Jesus turned to the crowd standing by and said, "I resurrected him — now you loosen him." One translation says unwrap him; one says unbind them; one says untie them. "That's the work of the ministry." Somebody has to take this Book as the sword of the Spirit and begin to cut away the grave clothes, and cut away the world, and cut away the philosophies, until that resurrected person gets free in the Holy Ghost. Holiness preaching and separation from the world is not antiquated, not out of date, not anti-revival, not anti-growth: until people reach a place of maturity in Jesus, "you may have a cloud, but you don't have a church — until Christ is formed in them." The grave clothes have got to go — and the grave clothes are our association, our identification, our connection and link with the dead, lifeless, perishing pit from which we have been called. "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" (quoted without a citation being spoken; see packet.md). Our world is sick of shysters, fakes, facades, Hollywood holiness; this is the finest hour for Christ-like character, Holy Ghost honesty, and the righteousness of Jesus Christ. "I want to challenge you to lose Lazarus, untie Lazarus, unwrapped Lazarus."
Nothing supersedes preaching: the ark held only the tables of stone
- He hastens on to First Kings chapter 8 and verse 9, and reads it: "There was nothing in the ark saved the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb (captioned "horror" and "horn"; see packet.md), when the people made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt (captioned "each"; see packet.md)." David came into Israel with the ark and danced before the Lord with all his might after six paces — and this verse illuminates that occurrence: when the ark originally fell into the hands of the Philistines, it held the two tables of stone, the pot of manna, and the rod of Aaron; but when the Philistines (captioned "police Dean's"; see packet.md) got rid of it and sent it back to Israel, they had taken out the pot of manna and the rod, and there was nothing there but the tables of stone. A whole lot of folks want a miracle pot; a whole lot want a rod of miraculous intervention — "but folks, I don't want the law of God" is the attitude he resists: when the ark came back, there was no pot of manna, no miraculous provision, no rod — nothing but two tables of stone, and David took six steps and could not stand it: the Word of God was coming back to Israel.
- "There's a lot of things we can do, but nothing supersedes preaching. There's a lot of ways we can bring folks into the church, but nothing supersedes preaching. That's the most important thing that happens in a Pentecostal church: the preaching of the Word of God." Honest preachers will reevaluate: none of us want to preach things that are not necessary — "i'm really kind of a confrontation fella, don't believe that, but it's true" — but he has an obligation to Lazarus and an obligation to Jesus: "I did my part; now I'm turning it over to you. I expect you to set him free." These things are not old-fashioned things that are out of date; they are still necessary in the church.
Scriptures: 1 Kings 8:9
Why the grave clothes have to go, I: they are built for dead people
- The first reason the grave clothes have to go (brother Becton, caption form, jumped the gun on him and hit his first point): even though Lazarus was resurrected, he would not have lived, because grave clothes are built for dead people — there is no way to breathe in grave clothes. Jesus said, in effect, "Now loosen him, and don't take all day about it," because his life is still in the balance: even though I resurrected him, if you don't get his face free, he's going to suffocate anyway. "We've got to get the world off of him. We've got to get the world out of them." And a word to preachers: if you want your church to start digging and jogging and shouting, start preaching against the world, against carnality.
- He tells of years ago, when he and sister Huntley were assisting a brother (name as captioned; see packet.md) in Houston, Texas: coming back late one night through the country, they saw something in the middle of the road pitching and jumping and leaping, like a headless something — a dog that had been rummaging in the trash and got its head stuck inside a big plastic mayonnaise jug, and could not get it out, and was about gone. His wife encouraged him to stop; they cut a hole in that plastic container, and that dog inhaled like you can't believe — and when they got it off, he jumped all over them, licked them, wagged his tail all over the place: he was liberated. "The saints of God come to our churches, they get baptized, they get the Holy Ghost, they talk in tongues" — but it takes a man of God with the Word of God to cut against them until Lazarus comes out of those grave clothes. After they talk in tongues, it is up to the ministry to set them free, to let them go.
Why the grave clothes have to go, II: testimony, fellowship, worship
- Second: as long as Lazarus had the grave clothes on, who knew it was Lazarus? Nobody really knew it was him until somebody started unwrapping and unwinding — that looks like his chin, looks like his mouth — Jesus did what he said he would do; he resurrected Lazarus. As long as folks still have their grave clothes on, the world doesn't know if the miracle has happened or not; but when they see you throw down your drugs and get rid of your cigarettes and your alcohol, they start saying, "He's resurrected — it's a miracle." And Lazarus had a marvelous testimony, but he couldn't tell it as long as he had grave clothes on — he's trying to say something, and nobody can understand him. Take the Word of God, loosen and unwrap him, and the world can hear what he's got to say: "I've been resurrected."
- Third: fellowship. You have to stay close to Lazarus right after he's resurrected — you lose him easy; "I'm tired of losing them." It doesn't upset the devil too much when he hears them speak in tongues a little, or when they're baptized in Jesus' name — but if, six months later, they're paying their tithes and living holy, it does. He acts out the saints' welcome of the bound man — massaging him, petting him, having fellowships and socials, eating dinner with him, playing ball with him — and says he will never really feel part of this church, because this is a holy church: as long as he's got grave clothes on, he just isn't going to fit, no matter what is done to make him fit. He is not talking about guests; he is talking about converts, and he is tired of it being thrown in the church's face that converts don't feel welcome or get fellowship when they have never been loosed. A convert really can't fellowship fully until the grave clothes are gone — what fellowship can the living have with the grave? We around here are not mortuary dwellers, not cemetery lovers; we are the resurrected body of Christ, and we don't dwell around the grave. At this point he names the man standing as Lazarus: "brother Simeon young" (caption form; see packet.md), whom he thanks for helping him — if you ever want to preach on Lazarus, he says, get him; he'd do a good job.
- Fourth: worship. "The Bible said he was bound hand and foot." He calls the saints to praise and acts out Lazarus trying — what's the matter with you, you can't raise your hands? — Lazarus couldn't get his up: bound hand and foot. Worldly, carnal churches are not spiritual bodies; but when the grave clothes are gone, Lazarus can worship God. "I love to see them get the Holy Ghost. I love to see them get baptized. But what thrills me is when I see those little ladies come in with short hair and they've got a little bitty bun back there about the size of a golf ball — I get the feeling they're getting the message. Something's happening." And: "Without holiness, no man shall see the Lord" (quoted without a citation being spoken; see packet.md). It means what it says — and it means this: if the devil can rid the church of its separation, its identification with Jesus, the world won't see Jesus in your community, because the only way the world sees Jesus is in the holiness of the church.
- He proves it from a restaurant: the pastors are the last ones to the restaurants, the saints already gone by the time he arrives; the owner greeted him — "How you doing, pastor?" — and mentioned his people who had been there earlier. How did the man know he was their pastor, when there are a lot of other churches and so-called Christians in town? "I'll tell you how: we've been set free. We don't have the grave clothes on. God has loosed us and liberated us, and we on look alike. And I like it that way."
The close: "Then gathered the chief priests"
- He finishes with the word of God: "Then gathered the chief priests" — the first word is the whole thing: then. When? After Lazarus was resurrected and after he got his grave clothes off — then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, "What do we do? for this man good many miracle he's doing." One of them is resurrecting the dead; the second is the freedom from the grave clothes. In this last hour of worldliness, separation from the world is itself a miracle. Teaching a home Bible study to folks just won to the Lord, moving faster and covering ground, he told the man on the sofa another difference about their church and lifestyle: "We don't believe that man boys oughta wear Bermuda shorts out in public. We just don't go out and dress like that." The man's eyes got that big: "For real?" He laughed — the man had never heard anything like that in his life. "I said, for real. This is liberty."
- And then, if we let him thus alone — if he keeps on resurrecting the dead and keeps on getting grave clothes off of them — "all men are going to believe." He closes with an intoxicated man who called him from a motel room, pathetic and pitiful, asking to be talked to and prayed for. The man had one question: "What did y'all do to Marty?" (name as captioned; see packet.md) — Marty had never been anything but a drug addict, and now the man comes to work transformed. "All the world will believe, we were resurrected and the grave clothes are taken all the second emission of spiritual deliverer." The caption track's last line, at 51:20, is the single word "you," ending mid-phrase in this closing story, about two seconds before the video ends; it is carried as captioned and disclosed here and in the packet, under the Fish precedent.

the grave clothes have got to go and the grave clothes are our association our identification our connection and our link with us and the dead lifeless perishing pit from which we have been called and somebody said it on a resurrection morn why see Kela livin why seek ye the living among the dead our world is sick of shysters fakes facades with Hollywood holiness this is the finest hour for christ-like character Holy Ghost honesty and the righteousness of Jesus Christ our message of holiness separation from the world is more needed right now than ever before and I want to challenge you to lose Lazarus untie Lazarus unwrapped Lazarus as a matter of fact I hasten on first Kings eight nine hang in there Lazarus we're gonna get you free here in a minute he's resurrected but he's bound yes sir everybody said hallelujah everybody shout hallelujah let me tell you something David came into Israel with the ark brother Williams mission last night he took six paces and went to shout far yes I began to dance before the Lord with all of his might with all of his might but there's a verse of scripture that illuminates that occur that occurrence to my mind in a most beautiful way and its first Kings eight nine there was nothing in the Ark saved the two tables of stone there was nothing in the Ark say the two tables of stone which Moses put there at Horeb which Moses had put there at Horeb when the people made a covenant with the children of Israel when they made a covenant with the children of Israel when they came out of the land of Egypt when they came out that's good thank you in other words when the ark fell into the hands of the Philistines originally in that Ark there was the two tables of stone there was the pot of manna and there was the rod of Aaron but when the Philistines got rid of it and got tired of it they took out the pot of manna they took out the rod that put it and when they sit it back to his room there was nothing there but the tables of stone there's a whole lot of folks that want a miracle pot there's a whole lot of folks Ron but folks I don't want the law of God but when that art came back to Israel there was no pot of manna in it no powerful provision there was no rod a miraculous intervention there was nothing there but two tables of stone and David took six steps Oh two tables of stone I can't stand it I can handle this the world of God's coming back to Israel whoo god help us Jesus I'm telling us a lot of things we can do but nothing supersedes preaching there's a lot of ways we can bring folks into the church but nothing supersedes preaching Oh hallelujah that's the most important thing that happens in a Pentecostal church the preaching of the word of God now are these things absolutely necessary brother honey preachers are away in their hearts reevaluate their positions if you're an honest man of God here today you're gonna have to say man it is son because there's none of us here that want to preach things that really are not necessary I mean I'm really kind of a non-confrontation fella don't believe that but it's true I really don't have to do with all that stuff but you see I got an obligation Lazarus and I've got an obligation to Jesus jesus said I did my part now I'm turning over to you I expect you to set him free
I'm telling you it's not old-fashioned things that are out of date they are still necessary in the church in nineteen the first reason it was absolutely necessary for the grave clothes to go brother Becton jumped the gun on me and hit my first point the reason the grave clothes have to go is because even though lazarus was resurrected he would not have lived because grave clothes are built for dead people and there's no way to breathe in grave clothes even though jesus resurrected him man Lancers didn't excited about this exact Sikhs me to get free and I say something else preacher if you want your church to start digging and jogging and shouting you start preaching against and you start preaching against the world you start preaching against carnality jesus said now loosen and don't you take all day about it cuz I'm telling you his life is still in the balances because even though I resurrected him if you don't get his face free he's gonna suffocate anyway we've got to get the world off of him we've got to get the world out of them we've got to get spit out of them if they're gonna real spiritually okay so sister Huntley and I years ago were assisting brother autumn rain falls in Houston Texas we've been out late one night we were headed back to the to the advantages quarters where we were staying and out in the middle the country Bella Falls Church down the country I saw something in the middle of road it was pitching and jumping and leaping like to scare me to death it looked like a headless something it did it looked like it didn't have a head on it and what the deal was it was a dog that had been rummaging in the trash somewhere knows who his big old plastic mayonnaise containers and they must have been done the smell of mayonnaise or a little mayonnaise left in there now he went in there after it when he got his head inside that plastic jug he couldn't get it out and he was out on Mill Road going and I thought what in the world is it was pictured I couldn't figure out one the world it was tell you the truth I scared today I thought it was the horseless the headless horse without the rider I didn't when he was my wife encouraged me to stop I wanted to old we finally stopped and that dog had his head that managed plastic jug in giving I mean he was he was about gone it was all the way around his head we knew we had a new something new something to hurt so we quickly jump Jeff chopped a hole in that plastic container and that dog managed those runs I mean he inhaled like you can't believe and when we finally got that container of him he jumped all over us he licked us he swung his tail old place I mean he was liberated the saints of God come to our churches they get baptized they get the Holy Ghost they talk in tongues but if you look why you preach and you'll see you matter I kill a man of God takes the Word of God and it against the priests the Lazarus comes out of those Plato's hallelujah after they talk in tongues it's up to the ministry to set a plea to
let him go you may be seated hey wait a minute I got a few more points I have to quit second thing I want you to notice about a Lazarus when I call you Lazarus you come to me okay Jesus said Lazarus come forth here come the Bible said he was found hand and foot now as long as Lazarus had the grave clothes on who knew it was Lazarus who knew it was Lazarus could you prove it was Lazarus but a lot of folks died who knew it was him nobody really knew it was him until somebody reached over there and started unwrapping and unwinding that looks like his chin looks like his mouth looks like his nude it's laughs right Jesus did what he said he was going to do he resurrected Lazarus and as long as folks have still got their grave clothes on the world really don't know if the miracle has happened or not but when they see you taller your drugs and get rid of your cigarette and get really alcohol then they start saying he's resurrected it's a miracle he's dead whoo all right we're not going laughing something else I want you to notice about Lazarus he had a marvelous testimony but he couldn't tell it as long as he had grave clothes on listen I think he's trying to say something no I don't understand that buddy he's trying to get a message to the world I wish we knew what last words were saying everybody I can't figure out what he's saying but I know one thing if I'll take the Word of God and I'll loosen and I'll unwrap him the world then can hear what he's got to say I've been resurrected but it's easy to tail a miracle has happened that's the second dimension of spiritual deliverance all right take him over here let's say brother Mangan would you mind letting map here see I'm free by taking around that we'll lose you got to stay close to Lazarus right after he's resurrected you lose him easy I'm tired of losing them I'm tired of losing I don't think it really upsets the devil too much when he hears her poking tongues a little bit oh when i baptize him in Jesus name but if six much later they're paying their ties and they live in holy it parts of high here we are charge here's the Saints well who's this oh it's one of the Brethren I tell by them dogs it sure ain't a cistern I just learned the brothers a Lazarus you're part of a son we're glad to have you now I'd say that all day and
I massage him i rub him I'm petting hidden I have fellowships and I have socials and I go eat dinner with him and I play ball with him and I do whatever I want to do with him and and he's never gonna really feel like he's a part of this church because this is a holy church as long as he's got grave clothes on he just ain't gonna fit no matter what I do to make him fit I'm not talking about this church I'm not talking about guests I'm talking about converse I'm tired of folks throwing it in the face of the church that they come but they don't feel welcome they don't get fellowship if they're sinners we'll work on that if they're new conversating don't work on stuff because bones you got wet clothes on you say you got what we got and we're all the same as long as you look - does that look like the same to you I said does he look like the rest shout honestly I'm saying say I got it - I got it - he really can't fellowship fully until the grave clothes are gone because what fellowship does then have with life and all of us around here are not mortuary dwellers we're not cemetery lovers we are resurrected body of Christ and we don't dwell around the grave one more point put him under one last time hey folks this is brother Simeon young well the greatest evangelist sending United Pentecostal church that's for helping me we advertisement you ever want to preach on Lazarus get better young in coverage for you he'd be a good job the Bible said he was bound hand and foot bound hand and foot let's praise the Lord Saints let's praise the Lord church such everybody worship God Oh answers what's the matter with you you can't raise your hands what's the matter with you as if I have two hands and praise the Lord the Lazarus couldn't get his up let's have I clap our hands under the lower bound hand and foot bound handed but I want to tell you something worldly carnal churches are not spiritual bodies but both when you get the grave clothes over and you say all right now listen everybody cut by hand let's everybody shout to the Lord with the voice of fire let's everybody plays God when the grave clothes are gone Lazarus can worship God you remain standing I love to see them get the holy ghost I love to see them get baptized but folks I'm gonna tell you what thrills me when I see those little ladies come in with short hair and they got a little bitty bun back there about the size of a golf ball I get the feeling they're getting the message something's happening the Bible said without holiness no man shall see the Lord now let me explain what that means to me it means just what it says for one thing but the second thing it means is and this is why the devil does not want us to be separate why he does not want us to be set apart when the book says without holiness no man shall see the Lord it means if the devil can rid the Church of its separation its identification with Jesus that they won't see Jesus when you go to work or when you go to school oh they won't see it in your community because the only way the world sees Jesus is in the holiness of the church it's in the
holiness of the church this was really spoken to me clearly just recently I went into a restaurant you know had his pastors or the last ones to the restaurants all the Saints are already there and usually going by the time you get there I came into a restaurant and the owner said how you doing pastor so fine he said but your people with you earlier they're all gone now I didn't say nothing but I thought I don't remember brother Barnes ever seen him visit our church and I really don't ever remember showing him our attendance row and there's a lot of other churches in town and there's a lot of other so-called Christians in town how did he know me and them went together how did he know I was their pastor I'll tell you how we've been set free we don't have the grave clothes all God has loosed us and liberated us and we all look alike and I like it that way I like it that way I like it that way I finish with this hear the word of God then gather the chief priests the first word is the whole thing then then when then yeah when then and then when I'll tell you when I'm being and then when after Lazarus was resurrected and after he got his grave clothes off that's when being and then wind after lashes was resurrected and after he got his grave clothes off the Bible said then gathered the chief priests the chief priests together and the Pharisee go ahead a council right and said what do we what are we going to do after the resurrection after the great closure removed what are we going to do for this man good many miracle he's doing many miracles who many miracles one of them is resurrecting the dead the second one is the freedom from the grave clothes hear me in this last hour of worldliness and the stickiness stubbornness of the stains of sin and the contamination of evil habits folks when they get separated from this world it is a miracle this generation makes you so absurd I was teaching a home Bible study the other day to some folks that we just won to the Lord they're moving kind of faster was covering some ground and probably wouldn't talk to others about that quite that fast so we're talking about some things and finally I said to the man they were sitting on her so for them it's just running over there listed so well you know another thing that's a different about our church and our basic lifestyle believers we don't believe that you know man boys oughta wear Bermuda shorts out in public you know we just don't go out and dress like that that man's eyes got that big and he said for real I just laughed he said for I mean he never heard anything about anything like that before in his life I said for real this is Liberty then then get the chief priests and the Pharisees that cancel and said what do we for this man do it many mirror he's doing many miracles if we let him thus alone and if we let him thus alone if he keeps on resurrecting the dead and keep on getting grave clothes off of them what's gonna happen all me all me all me all me owe me a triple evil he are gonna believe all men are gonna believe oh man are going above age thank you brother dangit get them right into music this is it right here a god it was intoxicated call me the other day and I fell in our church has been witness between this drunk guy was in a motel room by himself and he was pathetic he was pitiful he called me said I want you to come talk to me and pray for me preacher I said sure I went to the hotel to visit with him one of our guys that formerly was a drug addict really a messed up individual and sin
had been witnessed into him and so I went over there to talk to him and he was he was pitiful he was he was very intoxicated I began to talk to him he said just as me at Reverend he said just me he said oh actually one thing I just got one question he said what did y'all do to Marty I said what do you mean he said no just just add just just answer me one question I saw no he said Wow what did y'all do we Marty I said what do you mean he said you never been nothing but a drug addict and said man comes to works in all the world will believe we were resurrected and the grave clothes are taken all the second emission the second emission of spiritual deliverer you
