Summary

Summary prepared by Acts 2:38 Life from the transcript below — the preacher’s words follow in full.

The evil report

  • "Every heroic act, accomplishment, and deed in the book of Hebrews was done by faith." He riffs the chapter's own refrains — "now faith," "through faith," "by faith," "in faith" — woven with garbled number fragments in the captions: "We need a baptism of now faith — through faith, by faith, in faith — and you can possess your promise. If you don't have it, it's because you haven't believed God." (The garble is reported as rhetoric, not rebuilt into a reference; see packet.md.)
  • Ten spies brought back what we call a negative report — "but the Bible doesn't call it that, and God doesn't see it that way. The scripture states it was an evil report." It is evil to drink liquor, run with wild women, play poker, go to the movie shows, smoke cigarettes — "but there's nothing more wicked and more evil than to call God a liar. And unbelief says, 'You said it, but you won't do it.' While we're going to purge the body, let's get unbelief out."
  • "The word evil is only one letter from devil — and when you start talking negative, you are on the side of the adversary." Ten came back and said, "We can't" — and didn't. Two came back and said, "We can" — and did. Ask for the name of one of the two who said we can and everybody knows: Joshua and Caleb. Ask for one of the ten who said we can't, and in this theologically enlightened group probably nobody could give you one: "Nobody's interested in, and remembers, folks who say you can't. But if you want to be remembered, you better say, 'We can.'"
  • The water-to-gas story: a North Carolina preacher, now deceased, ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere on his way to preach a meeting; he heard the babbling brook down below, filled a bucket with water, and said, "God, if you can turn water to wine, you can turn water to gas."
  • Why he's here today, number one: "It's because Brother Manga called me" (caption form; see packet.md) — he was coming anyway, but the call "messed up my meeting," and he could have enjoyed all this where he'd been sweating, wondering if there was going to be any Bible left.

Scriptures: Hebrews (book-only)

The encourager

  • The other reason he's standing here: hundreds of people in this audience have said, "You're going to do good — we're anxious to hear you preaching, and we're behind you 100%." What has brought us to where we are is those among us who have said, "You can." If there's anything we need today a fresh baptism of, it's an encourager: somebody says we're going to build a new church — "You can do it." We're going to have a great revival — "You can do it." We're fixing to tear down the kingdom of Satan — "You can do it." They'll tell you you'll never build that new church — "Yes, you will." You can't establish that church in that city — "Yes, you can." You can't have a miracle ministry, can't be used of God — "Yes, you can. It's time to believe God."
  • He couldn't tell how many times this organization and alleged friends have shoved him out front — "Brother Honey will do it; he'll preach after Brother Tenny and before Brother Cole, and Brother Kore after Sister Megan" (caption forms; see packet.md) — and the only reason he had the gumption to walk up there is what just happened: everybody started saying, "You can do it." "God, my friends believe in me; my friends have confidence in me — I'm going to stand on their faith, and I'm going to stand on their trust. We need encouragers."
  • The general-conference letter, told to help young preachers: the letter said he was going to preach — a night speaker at the general conference. "What did I do to deserve this?" They told him months in advance — "you talk about a diet program" — and he was coming unraveled like a golf ball with its cover off. His wife, his encourager, asked him three questions: "Did you apply for that job?" — "My God, no." "Is that an international meeting, when people are coming from all over the world to be helped by God?" — afraid so. "What have you done that God would want to shame you in front of your friends and ruin the general conference?" — "I hope nothing." — "No, you know you haven't, and you don't need to worry. It's not your doing — it's his."

The grasshopper complex

  • The third reason they could not take the promised land: they had a grasshopper complex. "They said we were as grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." We've always preached that as a poor self-image, but the problem was not individual: "It wasn't that I see myself as a grasshopper — the problem is I see you as a grasshopper." They had an improper respect for each other; they saw each other as grasshoppers — zeros, insignificant nothings that could be stomped on and never missed. And this, when everybody there had had a miracle deliverance from Egypt — everybody had been under the blood and marched out by the power of God. "There's not a grasshopper in this building. We don't have a few good preachers and then some others; we don't have a few anointed men and then some others."

Respect for the ministry

  • "It's a sad day in Pentecost when I have to take 15 minutes telling you where I got my message and who told me and how many of them it was and how big he was, to get you to believe the Bible." He was a little facetious introducing the sermon this way, but: "Everything I'm preaching today, I got out of a book. Well, most of it — some of it might have come out of my brain." He doesn't need to tell how many got the Holy Ghost last week so the church will listen: "These young preachers need to know — that book's anointed, and you don't need to tell any spooky fairy tales to get this church to listen to you. All you need is to be called of God, anointed of God, and preach that book."
  • "When are we going to take the promised land? When we've got more than one Joshua and more than one Caleb, more than one preacher, more than one voice, more than one evangelist."
  • "I'm afraid we're losing something in the area of respect. You want to know why saints don't respect the ministry? It's because the ministry doesn't respect the ministry." As a rule, we encourage those who need it the least and give the most to those who need it the least: the big-shot preacher gets the big offering, not the starting evangelist who is struggling and may not have another meeting for three weeks.
  • What worries him: "When we cease to call each other brother, and we don't use last names, and we start calling everybody by their first name — you're not just Rex. You're not Bobby and David and Anthony. Billy — God have mercy: if I called him Billy, I'd be afraid lightning would come from heaven and hit me in the head. That's a man of God. And that's why we can't take the promised land — we don't respect each other as anointed, chosen, holy, separated vessels."
  • "Oh my God — and I'm quitting right here."

Brother Kilgore's respect — and the close

  • The restaurant story: Brother Foster and he were at the restaurant last night after church; you can't even get in line without talking to people, and your food gets cold while you're shaking hands. "That's why Brother Kilward doesn't gain weight" (caption form for the Kilgore of the story; see packet.md) — he talks more than he eats. His own wife claims he's a politician: "God knows I'm not a politician — I don't have enough tack to be a politician — but I'm waving to people I don't know. If they just look at me, I'll smile, wave at them; I'm talking to everybody."
  • "One reason I'm able to preach here today": as a student at Texas Bible College, when Brother Kilgore stood on the sidewalk talking — to anybody, it didn't matter who — and three Bible school boys from North Carolina that nobody knew came by, Kilgore would catch them in the periphery of his eye, turn around, and greet them. At general conference, knowing nobody, he searched the crowd for a friendly face. Then the notes at school: "Brother Huntley, Brother Wiggins is going to be out of town this weekend — could you go fill in for him?" — "I believe you could. I believe you can do it. I believe God will use you. You're right on." And he pushed him right out there: "God, I'm not here because I believe it — I'm here because he believes it. And somebody respected me and believed in me. And I owe every young preacher here: ask me any question you want to ask me — you're not taking my time. If there's anything that God's given me, I respect what you've got. You're called of God. Together, when we respect each other, we can take this promised land."
  • The close: "In closing — thank you, Brother Shord" (caption form; see packet.md) — "I want you to turn around to two or three, four or five people you don't even know and say, 'I believe God's called you, and I believe you can do it.' Somebody you don't know." (The instruction itself is unfinished and the video runs ~12 seconds past the last caption; the caption text is carried exactly as captured — see packet.md.)

Every heroic act, accomplishment, and deed in the book of Hebrews was done by faith. 111 now faith 113 through faith 114 by faith 11:113 in faith we need a baptism of now faith through faith by faith in faith and you can possess your promise if you you don't have it, it's because you haven't believed God. You just need to believe God. We are being challenged by the Holy Ghost to have a faith explosion. Hallelujah. 10 spies brought back what we call. And almost every time we refer to this scripturally, we never get it right. We always say they brought back a negative report. But the Bible doesn't call it that. And God doesn't see it that way. The scripture states it was an evil evil. It was an evil report. I know it's evil to drink liquor and run with wild women and play poker. I know it's evil to go to the movie shows and I know it's evil to smoke cigarettes. I know it's evil to do all those sinful things. But there's nothing more wicked and more evil than to call God a liar. And unbelief says you said it, but you won't do it. Go ahead. And while we're going to purge the body, let's get unbelief out. That's right. Hey, how can anything be difficult to believe when you serve a God who can do anything? Yeah. And there's a guy in North Carolina where he's deceased now, an oldtime preacher who declares that he was on his way to preach a meeting and he ran out of gas in his automobile out in the middle of nowhere and he needed fuel to get on to the meeting. And he looked around, there was no gas station anywhere. No way to get gas. He heard the babbling brook down below. He went down there and filled a bucket with water. And he said, "God, if you can turn water to wine, you can turn water to gas.

Amen. Getting deep in here, isn't it? But it's not over God's head. It's not over God's head. God can do anything. God can do anything. God can do anything. God can do anything. God can do anything. God can do anything. No time to get negative the word evil in relationship to a negative report. My lord is one letter from devil. When you start talking negative, you're getting close to the devil. Let me run that through the hopper one more time. The word evil is only one letter from devil. And when you start talking negative, you are on the side of the adversary. 10 came back and said we can't. Two came back and said we can. The 10 who said we can't didn't. And the two who said we can did. Those who are just simply believe they can. And those who are not just simply don't believe they can. It's really just that simple. And let me see. If I ask you the name of one of the two who said we can, everybody here would know. Joshua and Caleb. But if I ask you to give me the name of one of the 10 who said we can't in the midst of this theologically enlightened group in the midst of these Bible brains that are here's probably not one person maybe two or three that's heard the illustration before you checked up said I don't want to ever get caught in that shape again. Probably nobody could give you one of the name of the 10. The reason is nobody's interested and remembers folks who say you can't. But if you want to be remembered, you better say we can. You know why I'm here today? You may be seated. Number one, it's because brother Manga called me. I was coming anyway. I had it all set to come. and he called me and messed up my meeting and could have enjoyed all this where I've been sweating wondering if there's going to be any Bible left. That's one of the main reasons. The other reason I'm standing here today is because there are hundreds of people in this audience who have said you're going to do good and we're anxious to hear you preaching and we're behind you 100%. In other words, what I'm talking about is the thing that has brought us to where we are are those among us who have said you can. And if there's anything we need today, a fresh baptism of it's an encourager. It's an encourager. It's an encourager. Somebody says we're going to build a new church. You can do it. Somebody said, "We're going to have a great revival." You can do it. Somebody said, "God's going to use me." You can do it. Somebody said, "We're fixing to tear down the kingdom of Satan." You can do it. Turn around. Somebody say, "You can do it. You can do it. You can do it. You can do it. You can do it.

Somebody says you can't build. You can. They'll tell you you'll never build that new church. Yes, you will. You can't establish that church in that city. Yes, you can. You can't have a miracle ministry. Yes, you can. You can't be used of God. Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Yes, you can. It's time to believe God. You may be seated. I couldn't tell you how many times, right, this organization and allegedly friends have shoved me out front said, "Brother Honey will do it. He'll preach after brother Tenny and before brother Cole. and brother Kore after Sister Megan. The only reason I had the gumption to walk up here is because of what just happened right then. Everybody started saying, "You can do it. You can do it. You can do it. You can do it. You can do it. You can do it." And I said, "God, my friends believe in me. My friends have confidence in me. And I'm going to stand on their faith. And I'm going to stand on their trust. We need encouragers. You may be seated. The first time I ever preached at a general conference, I say this to help young preachers. They got the letter and said, "You're going to preach at night speaker at the general conference." Oh my god. Oh. What did I do to deserve this? You think I'm just preaching? I'm telling the truth. Oh, God. Oh, and the bad part about it is they told me months in advance. Months. Been better if they have waited the night before. Maybe months. Oh, God. You talk about a diet program. I was just about to lose it all, you know, just come unraveled about like a a golf ball that has those rubber bands inside. When I was a kid, you just take the cover off of them. Those golf balls just go, if you ever seen one, you know what they That's the way I was doing. And I was talking to my wife one morning, my encourager. And I was scared and crying. She said, "I want I want to ask you a couple questions." Go ahead. She said, "Number one, did you apply for that job?" My god, no.

My god, no. That's exactly what I said. I said, "No, I didn't ask anybody. I didn't say I'd like to have a chance." No. She said, "Well, let me ask you something else. Is that an international meeting when people are coming from all over the world to be helped by God?" Afraid so. She said, "One more question then. What have you done that God would want to shame you in front of your friends and ruin the general conference?" I hope nothing. I hope nothing. She said, "No, you know you haven't. And you don't need to worry. Praise God. It's not your doings. It's his. The next point I want to quickly make is this third reason they were at not able to take the promised land is because they had a grasshopper complex. Yeah. Now I know you've heard that. That's not new. That's all right. But I may twist it just a little bit like you hadn't considered it. They said we were as grasshoppers in our own sight and so we were in their sight. Now we've always preached that as a poor self-image. As as you see yourself, so will the adversary see you. But I I I got to noticing they said we were in ours. The problem was not an individual problem. It wasn't that I see myself as a grasshopper. The problem is I see you as a grasshopper. Yeah. And I see you as a grasshopper and I see you as a grasshopper. And I see you as a grasshopper. And I see you as a grasshopper. That's it. That's it. That is it. They had an improper respect for each other. They saw each other as grasshoppers. Well, what does a grasshopper mean? You guessed it. Nothing. They saw each other as zeros. They saw each other as an insignificant nothing that could be stomped on and nobody cared. Could be massacred and never missed. something that doesn't make an ounce of difference. Right? Something that has no uniqueness, something that has nothing special about it. And they said, "That's why we can't go in cuz we see each other as grasshoppers." That's it. That's it. That's it. When they should have realized that everybody there had a miracle deliverance from Egypt. Everybody, everybody there had been under the blood and the lamb in their tummy and marched out of Egypt by the power of God. I got to tell you today, there's not a grasshopper in this building. Amen. Turn around and somebody say you're not a grasshopper. You may be seated. We don't have a few good preachers and then some others. We don't have a few anointed men and then some others. Go ahead. Now, I want to say something right here that I really feel strongly about and then I'll quickly move on. It's a sad day in Pentecost when I have to take 15 minutes telling you where I got my message and who told me and how many of them it was and how big he was to get you to believe the Bible.

That's right. I know I was probably a little facetious, but this is the way I wanted to introduce my sermon today. I haven't seen any angels. Neither have I. God hadn't God hadn't hit me on the head and rolled me in the dust and said, "This is what I want you to preach." Everything I'm preaching today, I got out of a book. Hate to disappoint you. Everything I preach today, I got out of a book. Well, most of it. Some of it might have come out of my brain. Most of it came out of a book. And I don't think I ought to have to spend 30 minutes adding credibility to something that can't lie. And I'm not going to tell you how many I had to get the Holy Ghost last week. So you'll listen to me preach. These young preachers need to know that book's anointed and you don't need to tell any spooky fairy tales to get this church to listen to you. All you need is to be called of God, anointed of God, and preach that book. Listen to me. I got a word from the Lord. There's a bunch of them in here. What kind of trend are we setting in the church when we can't just open the book and preach, but we have to tell something way off the wall to get somebody to listen to us? We need to respect each other. that the man preaching is God called. He's God anointed. He was asked by godly people. Therefore, he's all right. We need to respect each other. Turn around to somebody say, "You're a mighty man of God. When are we going to take the promised land? When we got more than one Joshua and more than one Caleb? When we got more than one preacher? When we got more than one voice? When we've got more than one evangelist? remission. Now, no offense to anybody. If I was John Maxwell, I'd say just a thought. But I'm not John Maxwell and I don't have the diplomacy he's got, the charisma or the psychology. But I do believe I'm going to heaven. I'm afraid we're losing something in the area of respect. You want to know why saints don't respect the ministry? It's because the ministry doesn't respect the ministry. And the ministry propagates in our actions and our conducts. There's some big guys. That's you. Yeah. Everybody.

And then there's others that just because they haven't gotten where they want to be, they can sit in the prayer room or they can do the best they can. As a rule, we encourage those who need it the least and we give the most to those who need it the least. The big shot preacher gets the big offering. Not the starting evangelist who is struggling and may not have another meeting for three weeks. gets cut in pain because we don't respect each other and that's what kept them out. Here's what I laid the foundation to say. No offense, but it worries me when we cease to call each other brother and we don't use last names and we start calling everybody by their first name, men of God, men of God. Now, that may not mean nothing to you, but to me, there is some respect in that. Unless you are close, intimate peer friends. But as a man of God to other men of God, you're not just Rex. No. And if I call you that, I'm not acknowledging what God has given to you. You're not Bobby and David and Anthony and go ahead. Billy, God mercy. If I call him Billy, I'd be afraid lightning would come from heaven and hit me in the head. That's a man of God. That's a man of God. And that's why we can't take the promised land. We don't respect each other as anointed, chosen, holy, separated vessels. Oh my god. And I'm quitting right here. Brother Foster and I were at the restaurant last night at church. You know, there's wonderful people who know you and it's great to have friends. Yeah. And you can't even get in line without talking to people and say hello to people and you got your food there and it gets cold while you're shaking hands and Yeah. That's why brother Kilward doesn't gain weight. He talks more and he eats. My wife has the same problem. That's a Texas problem. Bluebell ice cream for you that don't know. And I said to brother Foster, I said, "You know, even in Raleigh, my wife claims that I'm a politician. God knows I'm not a politician." No, you're right. I don't have enough tack to be a politician, but I'm waving to people I don't know. Say hello to people. If they just look at me, I'll smile. Wave at them. I'm talking to everybody. Anybody? Any preachers here? Everybody everywhere. She says, "If I didn't know better, I think he was running for office." I'm not running for office. But I want to tell you something. Brother Kilgore, would you step up here? I want to tell you something. One reason I'm able to preach here today is because when I was a student at Texas Bible College and Brother De's and Brother Kilgore, Brother Kilgore be standing on the sidewalk talking to VA Gro or I don't care, Nathaniel.

Three Bible school boys come by from North Carolina that nobody knows. Brother Johnson, I remember going to general conference one. I didn't know anybody there. I searched the crowd for a friendly face and I knew no one. When I was at Texas Bible College, as a little boy from North Carolina, we could walk down the sidewalk, he'd be talking to Brother Mang, and we just kind of, "Oh, God. Don't let me interrupt that. Oh, God." And Brother Kilgore somehow would catch you in the periphery of his eyes and he'd turn around, he'd say, "Hey, boys. And then I get then I get notes at school and say, "Brother Huntley, Brother Wiggins is going to be out of town this weekend. Could you go fill in for him?" Could I? I believe you could. I believe you can do it. I believe God will use you. You're right on. And he pushed me right out there. I said, "God, I'm not here because I believe it. Yeah. I'm here because he believes it. And somebody respected me and believed in me. And I owe every young preacher here. Ask me any question you want to ask me. You're not taking my time. Sorry to bother you, brotherly. You're not bothering me. If there's anything that God's given me, I respect what you've got. You're called of God. Together, when we respect each other, we can take this promised land. In closing, thank you, brother Shord. I want you to turn around two or three, four or five people you don't even know and say, "I believe God's called you and I believe you can do it." Somebody you don't know.
